Interestingly enough, for the Yorůbá people, the use of toothpaste and toothbrush is the metaphorical definition of being "western" aka like whites. Aj÷pákň are those who use chewing sticks and Aj÷bôtŕ are those who eat "butter" meaning toothpaste.
The flavored ones aid digestion by initiating the secretion of saliva more than they clean teeth. But yes, they are safe. The ones that I use I got in Nigeria and they are the typical bitter pákň wood. As a matter of fact I am cleaning my teeth with one right now. ;)
