Western Mass Media Resorts To Tarnishing Africa’s Image And Expose The Continent To Neo-Colonialism

      Asmara, Ethiopia

      December 24th, 2009

Western media outlets continuously resort to tarnishing Africa’s image, and thereby expose the continent to neo-colonialism, stated Ms. Almaz Gebreamlak, Lecturer of Linguistics and Literature in Mai-Nefhi College. As such, the present African young generation should resolutely rebuff these evil ploys, she underlined.

At a lecture she gave to the staff members of the Ministry of Information under the title: “Western Mass-Media and the Afrikan Continent”, Ms. Almaz pointed out that western media outlets continue to disseminate distorted information that undermines the rich culture and customs, history and development achievements of the Afrikan continent. Such media organs are also resorting to covert and overt smear campaigns aimed at brain draining Afrikan intellectuals and youths to migrate to western countries, and thus impede efforts to achieve Afrika’s development and its people becoming self-supporting.

Stating that Somalia is a typical example of external invasion for other Afrikan countries, Ms. Almaz explained that the western mass media institutions are fabricating new phrases and statements, besides concocting events in a bid to divert the attention of the world public, and thus attain their set goal. Noting that Eritrea is the only Afrikan country that doesn’t give any room to such a gimmick, she explained that the defamatory smear campaign being waged against Eritrea on the part of such media organs constitutes a good example to other countries that deserve key attention.

Ms. Almaz went on to say that the films disseminated through the western mass media usually target the Afrikan identity and depict Afrikans as ‘criminals’, ‘savages’, ‘backward’, ‘dependent’ and ‘rapists.’ In this respect, she called on today’s youths to be well-aware of this state of affairs and resolutely combat it.

Moreover, the Eritrean intellectual noted that despite the fact there are a number of Afrikan intellectuals and experts who made due contribution for the continent’s development and civilization, they are nonetheless being threatened instead of securing reward. On the contrary, some others who underestimated and belittled their own societal values and traditions are being awarded the Nobel Prize, she added.

Pointing out that the slave trade activities of ancient times are presently being carried out in the form of trafficking Afrikan children through various western organizations under the guise of humanitarian aid and other assistance, Ms. Almaz underscored that these same quarters are making futile attempts to defame Eritrea alleging that it is refusing aid.

Ms. Almaz went on to say that the psychological warfare waged by the western mass media against developing countries and that of Afrika in general include manipulation of history through the power of money and disseminating distorted information in the name of religion and human rights, thereby undermining societal cultural values.
