Welcome to the Southern Alliance for Indigenous Resources (SAFIRE) website. We are a regional non governmental organisation, working with 20,000 households in poor and marginalized communities in Africa. Our focus is inclined towards the promotion of rural development through the sustainable utlisation, commercialisation and management of natural resources.

SAFIRE is currently implementing a range of projects under 3 broad livelihood enhancement programmes. These programmes are: Benefit driven natural resources management, Enhancing food security and nutrition and Information for development. NEW PROJECTS
Manjinji Irrigation Scheme

The Manjinji Irrigation Scheme rehabilitation project is being implemented in Malipati, Chiredzi District. Its goal is to alleviate poverty and food insecurity in the dry rural areas of Zimbabwe through rehabilitation of agricultural infrastructure and production of high value crops. The project is being implemented by SAFIRE with funding from LED.

Southern African Pesticidal Plants

The Southern African Pesticidal Plants project seeks to strengthen the generation of appropriate, cost effective and environmentally sustainable agricultural technologies using local plant materials for pest management in small- scale farming across the region. It is being implemented in Muzarabani, Nyanga (Zimbabwe) and Choma (Zambia).

Improvement of Agric Production Through Food for Work
The Improvement of agricultural production through food for work project is currently being implemented in Nyanga and Chimanimani districts. The objective of the project is to ensure that agricultural production improves through improved agricultural infrastructure, water management as well as skills and knowledge development in agriculture under irrigation. German Agro Action is sponsoring the project.

Human Resources SAFIRE has a competent and multi-disciplinary team of professionals drawn from the natural, social sciences and business field. An array of skills is found in SAFIRE and these include: Community-based Natural Resources Management (CBNRM), Social Forestry, Community-based Institutional Development, Monitoring and Evaluation, Participatory Reflection and Action (PRA), Sustainable Agriculture, Irrigation, Water and Sanitation, Information Communication Technology (ICT), Enterprise Development, Natural Product Development, Marketing, Terrestrial and Aquatic Ecology, Natural Resources Inventorying and Drought Mitigation. These professionals are backed up by comprehensive in-house administration, logistical support and financial management services.

An efficient team of nine members manages SAFIRE. The management team has a wide range of skills and experience relevant to rural development, community-based natural resources management and agriculture.
