Default The Name Akan and Migration Question

Didn't know where to put this so forgive me and feel free to relocate it into its proper place.

U know on Wikipedia they actually say that the name Akan comes to the people from Arabs?!?!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akan_language

I have a question about migrations. If a people migrate into an area that is already settled by another group of people and the language of the people already there is of a completely different language family what changes are likely to occur linguistically? Will everyone's language become "creolized" or is it more likely that the people who are just coming into the land will have more changes occur to their language over time? Does it depend on the ratio of the people already living there to the people coming into the land? When we look at the way the languages are classified right now if some groups of Nilo-Saharan speaking peoples were to uproot themselves for whatever reason from their homes and move into West Africa into the Niger-Congo speaking areas what type of things are likely to occur linguistically on both sides?

Default Re: The Name Akan and Migration Question

The name Akan comes from the word kan in Akuapem, pronounced kane in Asante and northerly dialects. It translates to first or foremost.

The best thing to due is look at actual case studies wherein the scenarios you are giving occurred. This would involve studying areal diffusion and genetic inheritance. There's no short and simple answer (that I know of) that will tell you what's going to happen 100% of the time (which is why there are enough volumes to fill a library on the subject), because there are so many factors that can play a part.
