How many women have had to face the horror of domestic violence? How many of us have had to flee with our children and continue to live in fear years after escaping our abusers? And how many of us have found ourselves living in situations that do not allow us the space, the strength or the time to nurture our children? Domestic violence does not merely hurt the women who abusers attack. It leaves lasting scars that transcend time. Children of abuse grow up to either repeat the cycle as an abuser or often times, they become the abused. What we must understand if we are to advance as a people, is that our thinking about women must be changed. That includes women themselves. We must abandon the notion that being a woman, a wife, a sister, a daughter or a mother, is equivalent to suffering, undo sacrifice, and back breaking service.
