WEAPONS, Ammo, and Training Recommendations

HANDGUNS: Advantages - concealable, can be operated with one hand, and is the best home defense weapon for a person with limited firearms training.
Disadvantages - they are the most difficult of all firearms to learn to effectively master, they shoot bullets which usually requires multiple hits in order to stop an assailant.

A. Revolvers - Advantages: Easiest of handguns to learn how to shoot; simple to operate.
Disadvantages: Limited ammunition (ammo) supply (usually 5 or 6 rds); more difficult to conceal; they are slower to reload.

Recommended calibers: .38 spl. & .357 (magnum) Hollow point bullets are best for defensive use. Full metal jacket and round nose bullets are best for practice.
Between the two recommended calibers, a .357 would make a better choice than a .38 Spl., not only is it much more powerful but it will shoot .38spc. Ammo as well!

Recommended Ammo: For the .38 spc. - 110gr., 125gr., 129gr.(hydro-shok)and 158gr lead Hollow point. All should be hollow point cartridges (bullets).
For the .357 - 110gr., and 125gr. Hollow points.
Recommended brands: Federal, Remington, Speer, Winchester, and Corbon are the brands I suggest.
General comments: Colt, Smith&Wesson, Ruger, and Taurus all make good quality revolvers.
Revolvers with 4 or 6 inch barrels are best for home defense, guns with 2 and
3 inch barrels are best for concealed carry. (A .357 with a 2 or 3 in. Barrel
Should only be used by a WELL TRAINED /SEASONED SHOOTER, it
Is NOT a beginners gun.

B. Semi-auto pistols - Advantages: usually hold more ammo than a revolver; they are faster to shoot and faster to reload; they have a flatter profile which makes for better concealment.
Disadvantages: They are more complex and difficult to learn than a revolver, and they are more prone to malfunctions.
Recommended calibers: 9mm, .40S&W., .357 Sig and .45ACP .

Recommended Ammo: For the 9mm - 115gr., 115gr.+P, and 124gr. Hollow points.
For the .40S&W - 135gr., 155gr., and 180gr Hollow points
For the .357 Sig – 125 gr. Hollow points.
For the .45ACP - 185gr., 200gr., and 230gr. Hollow points
General comments: Glock, Ruger, Taurus, Beretta, Smith&Wesson, Sig, and Colt all make good quality semi-auto pistols. The best value for your money will be from either Taurus or Ruger. My personal recommendation, however, for both novice and skilled shooter alike are the GLOCK pistols. They have the lightest weight, and highest magazine capacity (if you can find and afford pre-ban magazines) in their respective calibers. They are extremely reliable straight out of the box, and will feed almost any brand or style of ammo. 65% of police departments across the country from Anchorage, Ak. To Miami, Fl. That use semi-auto pistols use Glocks. The Glock .40S&W is the new general issue pistol for the F.B.I. The reason that so many depts. And agencies have chosen the Glock is that they are simple to operate, easy to learn, and extremely durable and reliable.

If you are not experienced with handguns I recommend the double action only models in all of the aforementioned brands and calibers.

Note: Stick to the recommended calibers! .22's, .25's, .32's, and .380's are not adequate self Defense/home defense calibers!!!

SHOTGUNS Advantages: The most devastating self defense weapon made (out to 15 yds.) It is the best weapon for home defense (only in the hands of a well trained person). It can utilize a variety of ammo (buckshot, slugs, teargas, smoke, and other exotic Rounds). They are legal in Chicago.
Disadvantages: It has brutal recoil!!! It takes both time and discipline to learn to use effectively. There are very few, if any, ranges where you can practice using buckshot.

Recommended calibers: Either 12ga. Or 20ga.

Recommended ammo: In 12ga. - 00-buckshot and 7/8 or 1 oz slugs.
In 20ga. - #5 buckshot and slugs

General comments: Either a pump action or semi-auto is fine. The pump is less prone to malfunctions, the semi-auto shoots much faster. Avoid folding stock (the part you put on your shoulder) shotguns and ones with a pistol grip but NO STOCK, they may look cool but they are difficult to hit with and brutal to the hand. ANYONE WHO SAYS YOU CAN’T MISS WITH A SHOTGUN HAS NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT!!!!!!!!!
Remington, Mossberg, Smith&Wesson, and Bennelli all make good quality
Shotguns in both pump action and semi-auto models. Bennelli, Smith &
Wesson, and Saiga all make excellent semi-automatic shotguns The best value for your Money is the Mossberg model 500 or 590 in pump or the Saiga in semi-auto. Which ever type shotgun you decide get one with an 18 to 20 in. Barrel. The Saiga (about $400) shotgun in either the sporting or combat models is a semi-auto, magazine fed shotgun based on the AK-47 design. In my humble opinion it is far better than the Bennelli (about $1000) but cost 2 ½ to 3 times less. It (Saiga) takes 5, 8 and soon to be 10 round magazines!

RIFLES: Advantages: Range and power. Both handguns and shotguns are
limited to about 25 yds. Effective range (although you can hit at 75 to 100 yds with shotgun slugs). The average effective range of most rifles (this entire conversation about rifles excludes the .22) is 200 to 500yds! Moreover, while a bullet proof vest will stop both handgun and shotgun rounds, they will not stop a rifle round. Most military style semi-auto rifles will take magazines which hold 20 to 30 rds. As opposed to 5 to 15 rds for a handgun or 4 to 8 rds for a shotgun.

Disadvantages: Most rifles are too long to conceal and too powerful to be used within a home or apartment (most will easily go through a home invader and SEVERAL WALLS posing a serious hazard to anyone else in the home)!!!

1st string weapons

Comment: Despite its popularity, the .223, while effective out to 150 yds. Is vastly inferior to the 7.62x39 in almost every way. The 7.62x39 beats the .223 in regards to weight, power, penetration, and range (150 meters for .223 VS 300 meters for the 7.62x39). While the .223 is “said” to be a more accurate round, its effective range is limited to about 150 meters. Even at 200 meters it displays only marginal stopping power. At 400 meters it has the same power as a .22 long rifle! When you also consider the weapons platform, the AK and its variants has the AR-15 and its variants beat hands down as well is regards to simplicity of operation, field striping, and reliability under adverse conditions.

2nd string
This category would include the M-1 Carbines and Pistol Caliber Carbines. The M-1 Carbine uses the .30-M1 cartridge and takes 15 & 30 rd magazines. While the FMJ .30 carbine rd. Is marginally effective, the soft points and hollow points are reported to be much more effective within its intended range of 100 yds. Corbon has recently developed the .30 Carbine DPX round which is reported to be the most effective rd for the M-1 ever made with excellent penetration and expansion. Pistol caliber carbines use the same cartridge and magazines as semi-auto pistols and come in 9mm, .40S&W, and .45acp. Ruger and Marlin are the primary manufacturers of pistol caliber carbines.
This category of rifles is limited to about 75 (pistol caliber carbines) to 100( M1 Carbine) yds. Effective range!


3rd string
This category includes lever action carbines (cowboy rifles) and usually comes in .357, and .44 magnum calibers. For these carbines, a heavy weight, hollow point will work best. (Keep in mind that these are hunting weapons which were never designed to endure sustained gunfire as in a firefight)

Recommended ammo: Full metal jacket (FMJ) rds. Tend to feed better than hollow points. Because rifle bullets move about 2and1/2 to 3 times as fast as a handgun bullet FMJ’s will work fine (for 1st string weapons). Hollow points will produce the best results for all other calibers.

Recommended quantities: I suggest 2000 rds. Per rifle, 500 rds. Per shotgun and 500 rds per hand Gun. Make sure you get extra magazines for the rifles (at least 10 per rifle) and semi-auto pistols (at least 6 per pistol), a bandolier for the shotgun and speed loaders (at least 6) for the revolvers.


Recommended training: Guns of any type REQUIRE training and regular practice in order to use effectively! Try, if at all possible, to get some professional training. The National Rifle Association [(202) 651-2560] keeps a list of firearms trainers throughout the country, call to get a list of trainers in the Chicago area. There are a number of shooting schools around the country. While they may be expensive, my question is how much is your life worth. You and your friends could pool your money to send one person to get trained who then comes back to teach the rest. Below is general information on what are referred to as the Big Four (top) shooting schools in this country.

Thunder Ranch in Lake View Oregon under the leadership of Clint Smith has one of the best training programs in the country and is considered by many to be THE Premier shooting school in the country.

Gunsite in Prescott Arizona was the first modern day shooting school started by Jeff Cooper considered to be the "father" modern amerikkkn pistol craft.

Defensive Training International in Laporte Colorado is headed up by John Farnam, considered by many in the gun world to be one of the best trainers over the past 30 yrs. DTI has a mobile training program that travels throughout the country. Check out their Webb site to see what’s happening in your area.

Lethal Force Institute located in Concord, New Hampshire headed up by Massad Ayoob also has a mobile training program. Not only is Ayoob a top notch trainer but also the founder and president of the American Society of law Enforcement Trainers.

While they are not overtly racist, they are white men ( Ayoob is an Arab) who consider themselves professional gunmen and assume the primary responsibility of training and preparing their people to preserve and advance their way of life. They are very serious and very good at what they do. Sometimes we got to learn to be the spook who sat by the door. If you want to learn about how to be humane go to Black folks, if you want to learn how to kill people go to white folks, they are real good at it cause they have had lots and lots of practice.

* A true assault rifle has select fire (machine gun) capabilities which NONE of these guns have.
