Kongo lexicon of the family and the family-in-law



Tata: father

Tata nkento: aunt, father's sister

Tata dia nléké: youngest brother of the father

Tata dia nkuluntu: oldest brother of the father

Mama, ngudi: mother, aunt and uncle on the maternal side

Mama-a-nkazi ou ngudi-a-nkazi ou ngwa nkazi: uncle on the maternal side

Mwana, bana: child, nephew and niece

Mwana nkazi: nephew, niece and child born of sisters of a same family, fully-flegged member of the clan who belong all their mothers.

Mwana mbuta or mbutani: nephew, niece, child born of brothers of a same family. Each one of them is member of the mother clan.

Nkaka: grand-parents

Nkaka-nkaka: great grand-parents

Ntékolo: grand-son, granddaughter.

Ntékololo or mwana ntékolo: great grand-son, great granddaughter

Nkuluntu, mfumu: oldest brother

Mpangi, nléké: youngest brother

Landi, landu: youngest one

Milandu: child born following twins

Mbutani: cousin on the paternal side

Nkŕzi or mukŕzi: wife, different from nkazi: brother

Nkazi: brother

Busi: sister

Nlumi or mulumi: husband

N’kŕma designate the brother's wifes of a same family.

M’pala or banda: co-wife

Nzadi: brother-in-law, sister-in-law

Buko: father-in-law, mother-in-law

Nkuézi: family-in-law
