Learning Yoruba is an important aspect of my personal development, and I want to take care of it now. If one does not understand their own language, how can they fully participate in their culture? And how much would I miss out on?
Apparently when I was a young child, I was able to speak and understand Yoruba, but once I started attending school with my peers, I spoke only English on a daily basis, and my skills faded away. When I would visit Nigeria, many of my family members and people I encountered would tease me.. Calling me white or American because I could not communicate using the language. This bothered me tremendously, but what could I do? I've always felt they had the unfair advantage of being brought up where they HAD to speak it, but that's besides the point.. Let me not get off track.
I am a child of the Yoruba. And I believe that we have a beautiful culture. And I know that I have a beautiful family. I just want to be able to appreciate it all fully, down to my Grandma's storytelling humor. That is why I must learn Yoruba
