'Black Detroit' author Herb Boyd is coming back to city for book signing event

Detroit Free Press staffPublished 6:01 p.m. ET June 25, 2017

Herb Boyd, awarding-winning author, journalist and historian — and Wayne State University graduate — is making a second visit home to Detroit to discuss and sign his new book "Black Detroit: A People’s History of Self-Determination," (Amistad).

Detroit Free Press columnist Rochelle Riley will host "A Conversation With Herb Boyd" at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 20 at the Northwest Activities Center, 18100 Meyers Road in Detroit. They will discuss Boyd's book — a thorough, chronological, stunningly detailed look at Detroit’s incarnation and development through the eyes of those ignored, marginalized or unheralded because of color. Boyd will sign copies after the conversation.

Boyd, who teaches in the Black Studies Department at City College of New York, will return again for the Women's Informal Network's 25th anniversary celebration called "Men Who Count" on Friday, October 27 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. For more information, contact Pat Cole at [email protected].

Boyd has written or edited more than 20 books, including: "Baldwin’s Harlem" (Atria Books) a biography of James Baldwin; "Brotherman: The Odyssey of Black Men in America: An Anthology; Black Panthers for Beginners" (Writers & Readers); "Autobiography of a People: Three Centuries of African American History Told By Those Who Lived It "(Doubleday); "Race and Resistance: African Americans in the 21st Century" (South End Press); "The Harlem Reader" (Crown Publishers); "We Shall Overcome: A History of the Civil Rights Movement" (Sourcebooks); and "Pound for Pound:The Life and Times of Sugar Ray Robinson" (Amistad).

You can buy copies of "Black Detroit" before Boyd's visit at Book Beat in the Lincoln Shopping Center, 26010 Greenfield Rd, Oak Park, MI 48237.

For more information or to book Boyd for other book signings and events, send an email to: herb[email protected].
