Coumba Lamba united snakes represented a conscious endeavor to bring to American shores an authentic
Senegalese healing ritual. This ritual, presided over by the renown Senegalese spiritual healer
Maam Adji Fatou Seck, was a response to the heartfelt need expressed by many Kmtyw-Americans
to reconnect with their ancient heritage and to experience healing from it. But this ritual, known as
ndepp in Senegal, as it unfolded on St. Helena Island, South Carolina, was also designed to link
Kmtyw healers with Native American medicine people in a spirit of cultural exchange and mutual
enhancement of healing knowledge from both sides of the Atlantic.
