Title: What is the meaning of Kohwini?-gctid230068
Post by: KobieSmith on Apr 22, 2017, 02:52 PM
Kohwini is an interesting word that I've come across in my studies of the Twi language but I can never find its explanation in any Twi books that I have. Does anyone know the origin of this word? Is it native to the Akan language or is it borrowed from a different ethnic group?. :soldiert:

Its used as an insult: Woyɛ kohwini! However, I'd like to know the etymology of the word.

Kowhi means deception so it is possible that the /ni/ added at the end makes it an adjective to means deceptive?

The affix [ni] would probably refer to a single person: Meyɛ Asanteni - "I am an Asante". This is compared to the affix [foɔ] which describes multiple people: Wɔn nyinaa yɛ Asantefoɔ - "They are all Asante people". So, I'm sure the [ni] affix in Kohwini refers to an individual person. In that case, I bet you can say: Moyɛ kohwifoɔ!

For the word "deception", I have  "nnaadaa" in my dictionary. Of course this is from the word "dada" Adeɛn nti na w'adada me?! - Why have you deceived me? Where did you see that word "Kowhi"? That is Twi?

I never knew what a "wanker" was or meant until very recently. Even after being around folks from g.b. for a number of years.

Kohwini, if I'm not mistaken, is "A LIAR" or "DECEIVER" in Fante (Akan) language. Dr. Obadele Kambon will correct me, if I'm wrong.
