Interesting.  I just had a similar conversation with my son's girlfriend mother and her 3 daughters. When the mother heard me greet her in Twi she was amazed. Her own daughters can understand but cannot speak the language, her son moved back to Ghana and was teased so much that he just moved back to united snakes and doesn't speak twi anymore. Only her eldest son can speak and understand it even he cannot write or read Twi. So I asked them why they don't know their language...the mother asked them why...the kids said it's your fault because you didn't teach us. The mother says to me anytime I want to speak Twi she will help me.

This is the same family I mentioned said the if it is a male Nana is pronounced different then if a female is called Nana.

Typical situation. Lots of students through the years have a grudge against their parents for doing this to them.
Ask them to pronounce Nana Yaa and tell me what you hear.
