"It's really interesting to see those connections," says Stuart Tyson Smith (http://www.anth.ucsb.edu/people/stuart-tyson-smith), an archaeologist from the University of California, Santa Barbara, who was not part of the study team. "It gives us a nice piece of the puzzle that we didn't have before."

The study, published today in the Journal of Archaeological Science (https://www.journals.elsevier.com/journal-of-archaeological-science), comes after decades of meticulous work with prehistoric mummies. Study coauthor Jana Jones (https://www.mq.edu.au/about_us/faculties_and_departments/faculty_of_arts/department_of_ancient_history/staff/jana_jones/), an Egyptologist at Macquarie University, got her first hints of this early mummification in the 1990s, when she was studying ancient mummy wrappings that date to roughly 6,600 years ago.

Jones peered at the wrappings under a microscope and was astounded: The cloths appeared to contain remnants of an embalming resin, a compound commonly seen in later mummies. "It was just an incredible feeling," she says.

But microscopic evidence wasn't enough to say Egyptians embalmed their dead thounited snakesnds of years earlier than previously thought. That required careful chemistry, and it took Jones and her team 10 years to complete the analysis. "That was just the curse of the mummy," she quips. The team finally confirmed the find on the wrappings in 2014 (http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0103608), publishing those results in PLOS ONE.

"That was the ground-breaking moment," says Stephen Buckley (https://www.york.ac.uk/archaeology/staff/research-staff/stephen-buckley/), an archaeological chemist and expert in mummification who led the chemical analysis for both the 2014 study and this latest work.

But some experts remained skeptical, Jones says. The researchers lacked evidence from an actual mummy, since the textiles had long been separated from their preserved owner. So they turned to the Turin mummy for more clues.

Nail in the Sarcophagus

The Turin mummy—or "Fred" as he is often affectionately called—has been housed in Turin's Egyptian Museum since the early 1900s, and he had remained untouched by modern preservatives and unstudied by scientists.

The researchers subjected samples from the mummy to a battery of tests, teasing out the precise chemical components of the ancient embalming recipe. They found that the salve had a base of plant oils that was then mixed with plant gum or sugars, heated conifer resin, and aromatic plant extracts. The latter pair of ingredients are particularly important, since they stave off microbial growth.

The components of the paste not only resemble those used thounited snakesnds of years later in Egypt, but they also bear a striking similarity to the chemistry of the salve researchers had identified in the prehistoric mummy wrappings.

"It's confirming our previous research, undoubtedly," says Jones.

With their commonly curled positions and organs still inside their shriveled bodies, prehistoric mummies are a far cry from the classic entombed mummies that come to mind when you think of Egypt. But the basic idea behind an embalming salve remained the same.

The balm would have formed "sort of a sticky brown paste," Jones says. Bandages were either dipped before wrapping, or the embalmer would directly smear the paste on the body. The mummy was then positioned in the hot sand so that a combination of the searing sun and balm preservatives would keep the body safe.

Later "classic" mummies were more often laid flat and interred in tombs far from the sun's rays. Because of this, Buckley says, the embalmers had to take additional measures, such as removing the brain and other organs, as well as desiccating the body with a type of salt called natron.

Recipe Reconstruction

The study also suggests that early embalming practices were much more widely spread than once thought. The wrappings analyzed in the earlier study hail from a part of Egypt that's over a hundred miles north of where the Turin mummy was likely preserved.

So how did ancient Egyptians figure out the recipe so long ago?

"Some of these ingredients may well have had a symbolic significance initially," Buckley speculates. "But then they noticed that they had a preservative benefit." The team is now studying sites of early experimentation with embalming ingredients, says Buckley, hinting at a future publication.

Ronn Wade (https://www.medicalalumni.org/bulletin/spring_2001/staff.html), retired director of the anatomical services division of the University Maryland, praised the new study for its thoroughness. In 1994, Wade replicated the Egyptian mummification process on a modern human with support from a National Geographic grant.

"I wish we had some of this information when we were doing our mummy," he says. "That would have been interesting."

Prehistoric mummy reveals ancient Egyptian embalming 'recipe' was around for millennia

The ancient Egyptians developed sophisticated embalming treatments far earlier and across a wider geographical area than had been previously known, forensic tests on a well-known prehistoric mummy have revealed.

It is the first time that extensive tests have been carried out on an intact prehistoric mummy, consolidating the researchers' previous findings that embalming was taking place 1,500 years earlier than previously accepted.

Dating from c.3700-3500 BC, the mummy has been housed in the Egyptian Museum in Turin since 1901, but unlike the majority of other prehistoric mummies in museums, it has never undergone any conservation treatments, providing a unique opportunity for accurate scientific analysis. 

Like its famous counterpart Gebelein Man A in the British Museum (http://www.britishmuseum.org/), the Turin mummy was previously assumed to have been naturally mummified by the desiccating action of the hot, dry desert sand.

Plant oil

Using chemical analysis, the scientific team led by the Universities of York and Macquarie uncovered evidence that the mummy had in fact undergone an embalming process, with a plant oil, heated conifer resin, an aromatic plant extract and a plant gum/sugar mixed together and used to impregnate the funerary textiles in which the body was wrapped.

This 'recipe' contained antibacterial agents, used in similar proportions to those employed by the Egyptian embalmers when their skill was at its peak some 2,500 years later.

The study builds on the previous research (https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0103608) from 2014 which first identified the presence of complex embalming agents in surviving fragments of linen wrappings from prehistoric bodies in now obliterated tombs at Mostagedda in Middle Egypt.

Classic mummification

The team, which includes researchers from the Universities of York, Macquarie, Oxford, Warwick, Trento and Turin, highlight the fact that the mummy came from Upper (southern) Egypt, which offers the first indication that the embalming recipe was being used over a wider geographical area at a time when the concept of a pan-Egyptian identity was supposedly still developing.

Archaeological chemist and mummification expert, Dr Stephen Buckley, from the University of York's BioArCh facility (https://www.york.ac.uk/archaeology/centres-facilities/bioarch/), said: "Having identified very similar embalming recipes in our previous research on prehistoric burials, this latest study provides both the first evidence for the wider geographical use of these balms and the first ever unequivocal scientific evidence for the use of embalming on an intact, prehistoric Egyptian mummy.

"Moreover, this preservative treatment contained antibacterial constituents in the same proportions as those used in later 'true' mummification. As such, our findings represent the literal embodiment of the forerunners of classic mummification, which would become one of the central and iconic pillars of ancient Egyptian culture."

Genetic investigation

Dr Jana Jones, Egyptologist and expert on ancient Egyptian burial practices from Macquarie University (https://www.mq.edu.au/), said: "The examination of the Turin body makes a momentous contribution to our limited knowledge of the prehistoric period and the expansion of early mummification practices as well as providing vital, new information on this particular mummy.

"By combining chemical analysis with visual examination of the body, genetic investigations, radiocarbon dating and microscopic analysis of the linen wrappings, we confirmed that this ritual mummification process took place around 3600 BC on a male, aged between 20 and 30 years when he died."

Professor Tom Higham, Deputy Director Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit (https://c14.arch.ox.ac.uk/), said: "There are very few mummies of this 'natural' type available for analysis. Our radiocarbon dating shows it dates to the early Naqada phase of Egyptian prehistory, substantially earlier than the classic Pharaonic period, and this early age offers us an unparalleled glimpse into funerary treatment before the rise of the state.

"The results change significantly our understanding of the development of mummification and the use of embalming agents and demonstrate the power of interdisciplinary science in understanding the past."

Examination of a mummy has revealed the original ancient Egyptian embalming recipe - first used to preserve bodies.

A battery of forensic chemical tests carried out on a mummy that dated from 3,700-3,500 BC revealed the recipe and confirmed that it was developed far earlier and used more widely than previously thought.

The Egyptian Museum in Turin, Italy, is now home to the mummy in question.

The findings are published in the Journal of Archaeological Science.

Dr Stephen Buckley, an archaeologist from the University of York, told BBC News that this mummy "literally embodies the embalming that was at the heart of Egyptian mummification for 4,000 years".

Dr Buckley and his colleagues worked out the chemical "fingerprint" of every ingredient, although each element could have come from a number of sources.

So the basic recipe was:

a plant oil - possibly sesame oil;
a "balsam-type" plant or root extract that may have come from bullrushes;
a plant-based gum - a natural sugar that may have been extracted from acacia;
crucially, a conifer tree resin, which was probably pine resin
When mixed into the oil, that resin would have given it antibacterial properties, protecting the body from decay.

"Until now," he said, "we've not had a prehistoric mummy that has actually demonstrated - so perfectly through the chemistry - the origins of what would become the iconic mummification that we know all about."

How did scientists find the recipe?
Dr Buckley began searching for the recipe several years ago when he and his team extracted and analysed the chemicals from Egyptian textiles that had been used to wrap mummies. The textiles are part of an Egyptian collection at Bolton Museum in the north of England.

Dating to around 4,000 BC, these particular fabrics were much older than the point at which it was believed that embalming and mummification originated. "Mummification in general supposedly started around 2,600 BC - when the Great Pyramid was being built," Dr Buckley said.

"But we observed that there was evidence that preservation of the body started earlier than this."

This discovery led the team to the prehistoric mummy in the Turin museum collection. It has never undergone any conservation treatments, so it provided a unique opportunity to study unpolluted ancient Egyptian chemistry.

Why does it matter?
The fact that this same recipe was used almost 2,000 years later to embalm the Pharaohs, Dr Buckley said, means "we have a sort of Pan-Egyptian identity well before the formation of the world's first nation state in 3,100 BC. Its origins are much earlier than we thought".

It also reveals an insight into how and when the Ancient Egyptians perfected an antibacterial embalming recipe that protected and preserved their dead - leaving behind the iconic Egyptian mummies we are now so familiar with.

Embalming was just one step in the careful process of preserving a body. The key steps of mummification were:

Removal of the brain - possibly using a "whisking" process to cause the brain to liquefy
Removal of the internal organs
Putting the body into a natural salt to dry it out
Coating the body in the embalming recipe to kill bacteria and to seal it
Wrapping the body in linen
"It was the drying and the embalming recipe that were key to preservation," explained Dr Buckley.

"Egyptian mummification was at the heart of their culture."

He added: "The afterlife was just a continuation of enjoying life. But they needed the body to be preserved in order for the spirit to have a place to reside."
