I am interested in the book club, but I had some questions about it. Is there an actual group that has an established time allowed for completion of a book that is followed by a discussion or comment/opinion thread or chat for that book? Who is able to submit books for suggested reading by the group? Or is this section just a place for members to list recommended books that are beneficial and/or enjoyable for individual reading? Thank you to all that respond.

As of now it's just an idea. No one has taken charge to start it up as of yet, including those who proposed it as an idea. Whenever someone decides to organize it, it will be at that time that the book club will be what the organizer conceives it to be.

i've never been part of a book club but i think i get how it works (or can work)....we have a list of books to cover and allot a certain amount of time for each one. i guess that would depend on the size of the book. then we come together to discuss the book...what we learned, how the book impacted us, kwk). then we move on to the next book. one of the main benefits i see of this type of approach is that we have the opportunity to gain insight/ a different perspective of the material we're studying through the discussion with the group.
the other way could be if we have a book list and each club member would be responsible for reading her/his assigned book and presenting on it (kinda like a book report). the main benefit i see of this option is that it'll give us the opportunity to be exposed to a number of books even if we haven't had the opportunity to read them cover to cover (of course this would not substitute for us reading the books ourselves but will provide some insight into the books and the valuable information contained in them).
what are your thoughts?? once we can agree on the format we can start working on getting the club up and running.

I say we formally get the wheels turning on this book club project! In my humble opinion, the first format you presented offers the most rewards to the collective. I would only suggest that it be set up on a two week basis to allow adequate time for reading, reflection and proper interpretation of thoughts/what was read. We can assign reading [140pgs, 10 pgs a day x 2weeks] and meet back up and discuss [members classroom maybe] those same examples you gave. The possible limitations to this format will be some members forgetting the date and time of the meeting and location, conflicting schedules. Nevertheless, I think it is the solid choice and we can modify it once the book club gets up and running.
The next logical step is to gather up all like-minded individuals and plan out the particulars . For those interested, if you would like to reccommend a book feel free to do so. Personally, I would like to read "Two Thounited snakesnd Seasons" by Ayi Kwei Armah. And since it looks like the book club consist of Sis Aisha and myself [for now], Aisha what do you think about starting with "Two Thounited snakesnd Seasons?" Have you already read it?

I'm trying to get all the men in the Asafo: Kmtyw Men's Learning Circle to read "The Last Blak Man Standing" but I haven't received a confirmation that the brothers have all picked up the book, so I can start asap. Even though I'm reading two books at the moment, "Kmtyw Spirituality" by Anthony Ephirim-Donkok [almost finished] which is Blacktastic [READ it Aisha, it deals with Akan spirituality] as well "Sovereign Evolution" by Ezrah Aharone[Zenzele and I are reading it together, Baba Baruti reccommended that I pick up the book a month or so ago and when my elders speak I LISTEN!!!] but I see no problem adding to the list [especially since Kmtyw Spirituality will be completed in less than a week]. Plus I've heard reading Two Thounited snakesnd Seasons is similar to being born again!!!

sounds like a plan! ive read 2000 seasons. BLACKCELLENT book. wouldnt mind reading it again (its been a couple years since i read it). let me know what day/time works best for you. my time is full but flexible. the Last Black Man is a blacknificent book. highly recommended for any serious Kmtyw.

@ Obadele, The Last Black Man Standing is Blacktastic!! I'll have to send out a formal email to see if there is a consensus with the brothers in regards to starting this book IMMEDIATELY. Brother Khepra and myself have agreed that this would be a Blacknificent starting point for us as a collective. Having read the book and answered a few of the questions at the end of the book, I think this work is invaluable to Kmtyw Men [and Kmtyw womb-man] who want to ensure the survival of our race and real-eyes the crucial role that each of us play.
@ Aisha, Have you come in contact with any Kmtyws interested in joining us ? I think all of the books you suggested are Blacknificent. I think I have all the books you mentioned. If Two Thounited snakesnd seasons was off the table my next choice would probably be:
*The Healers [you can probably tell that I want to read Ayi Kwei Armah's work... I think it stems from my embarrassment in not having done so already]
*The Black Jacobins
*Enemies:The Clash of Races
But I am in alignment with all of your reccommendations as well. If more people don't express an interest to join in the next week or so, I say between the two of us we just pick a book.
I think "David Walker's Appeal" by David Walker would be another Blacknificent book for us to consider reading, along with those already mentioned.:sankofa:
yoo. The Healers is also a blackcellent book (i'm an Ayi Kwei Armah fan). 2000 Seasons and Healers are the only books I've read from him so far but I plan to get and read ALL his works. They are the kind of books that you feel sad when you're finished reading them, not because the books were sad books but because the experience is "over". there's a lot of ancestral wisdom in them and even though I read 2000 Seasons three years ago quotes and scenes from the books regularly run through my mind and have always affected my thoughts. 2000 Seasons helped me to FEEL ourstorical experience in a powerful way (not all books have that effect).
Your book suggestions are great. I'd need to get Enemies: clash of the races so that should be a 2nd or 3rd read but I have the others. Looks like we have a nice lil list here already (and I have a few more). I say we start with 2000 Seasons as that was your first pick and continue from there (each member can have a turn picking the next read from the list). I don't know of anyone else who has interest in the book club other than those who've posted recently. Hopefully they'll respond soon. In any case, we can get started next week even if its just the two of us.

Aane Sundiata I have read Irritated Genie. BLACKNIFICENT book and a very necessary read for all of us. I'm happy to alternate between the two books and I believe I can take liberty and speak for Akhu (I'm almost 100% certain he would agree with me) on this one too. Just the other day we were talking of books and both Two Thounited snakesnd Season and Irritated Genie (if I remember correctly) came up. I also know that he is researching the Ayitian Revolution now. I like the idea because, without giving away the theme of either book, I see the link/connection between the two. We just have to keep track of which book we'll be discussing on which day (cause your sister might get confused and flip em lol). I'll send Akhu a msg to confirm his agreement with the plan...and to warn him that there'll be NO math discussed at these sessions! :)

I have started reading this work and thought it would be a GREAT idea to meet up with my Abibitumikasa family to critically analyze this important and invaluable work. I have had this work in my possession for over a year, but I was not at the appropriate developmental stage to properly and adequately comprehend and incorporate its concepts into my life. However, the time is NOW!!! Who is with me?

@ Akua, you have been lobbying for this book for a year! Tell me the best days and times for you and I will work around them. Or we can schedule reading i.e. a chapter every week or two and open a thread devoted to our discussions on the readings. The latter might be the best idea because of our locations and time difference. We could still meet up periodically, but emphasize on contributing to a thread instead of a conference call. Also, the thread would allow others to benefit from our discussions on the readings. Moreso than isolated conversations in conference rooms. What do you think? We could start asap also.
