Residents of a section of Old Harbour Bay, St. Catherine, yesterday lined the streets and burned incense and myrrh in a desperate effort to chase away a duppy they say has been haunting them.
'Duppy Derrick' has been slamming doors and throwing fans and other objects in one house, and has also tried to scare several residents in the normally quiet fishing village known as Panton Town.
The residents say that 'Derrick' claims he was sent from McCook's Pen, and has come for his woman and his little boy and will not leave until he gets them.
When THE STAR visited the house where the alleged duppy sightings took place, one woman, Dianne, who claims she had to be taken to a church so that the ghost could be exorcised, told THE STAR of her encounter.
"Is I it happen to ennuh sah. Monday mawnin about four o'clock, mi go 'roun a di back cause mi 'ear seh one duppy roun deh, mi jus feel wen mi bady start jerk and mi feel totally different," said Dianne, who had gone to the house out of curiosity, after hearing about the ghost.
For the owner of the house, however, it is a different story. She said that the ghost claims that she looks like his woman and has been haunting her as a result.
"Him determine seh him naw lef yah but mi naw come outta mi house gi im. Dats why wi a burn fire wid pepper, incense and myrrh," said the owner, who spoke to THE STAR on condition of anonymity.
Another resident, Mark Tyson, said the duppy's scaring tactics have stretched much further than the house.
"Last night im throw sand inna one woman eye an start stink up di place but wi naw leave," he said.
It is said that Derrick claims that the residents are too 'faas' and he is going to teach them a lesson.
As the antics of Derrick transform the sleepy fishing village, several persons have been quivering in fear when night falls, while others are excited about the prospect of entertainment from the ghost's various activities.

Residents say spirit stalks killers, wants them dead

The 'duppy' of a man known as 'Jumbie' who once resided in the 'Burger Gully' community of eastern Kingston is said to be haunting residents - especially those who were involved in his killing.
Residents of the community, which is between lower Mountain View Avenue and Homestead Road in Kingston 2, are all aware of the duppy story. They claim the duppy will not rest until revenge against the killers is taken. "Bway, di man madda seh har son nah go res' until him killas dem dead," one resident claimed.
The residents say that the duppy has been wreaking havoc in the community, especially at nights. "... A real ting man. A crazy tings a gwaan a nighttime," one resident said when questioned. "A pure strange soun', zinc a beat dung an all dem ting deh."
The duppy seems to be targeting specific houses and individuals. "Yu si di man dem who plan up an' kill Jumbie, a dem a feel di wrath rite ya now," said another female resident who claims she was a close friend of the victim.
no 'shotta Man'
THE STAR was told that Jumbie was killed because he did not want to be a part of a 'shotta mission' which was ordered by the 'big man' in the community.
On March 20, Jumbie was shot and killed after he was robbed and his car stolen. His body was dumped in the McGregor Gully community. Police later arrested a man in connection with the murder.
DSP Michael Ellis, head of crime for the Eastern Kingston Division, says that he has heard of the Jumbie duppy stories in the community. He said that, in terms of the murder case, they had charged the man who had been arrested.
The duppy is also said to be showing much interest in a well-known lesbian woman who is rumoured to have been involved in his killing. The woman, who resides on Langston Road in Kingston 2, was not willing to answer any questions. However, residents from the area claim the rumours to be true. According to them, during one of its attacks, the duppy left her in shock. She was so traumatised that she urinated and defecated on herself.

Killed by duppy? 3 more girls have mystery illness

THREE EIGHT-YEAR-OLD female students of Waterford Primary School have become mysteriously ill in the past three weeks. All three girls are in the same grade three class. Last November another one of their classmates, Shanice Leshue, died after she too became ill while she was at school.
The parents of two of the sick girls told THE STAR they feel their daughters are possessed by demons. Shanice's parents firmly believe that demons killed her.
Conrad, her father, told THE STAR that Shanice took ill at school and died within a week. An autopsy listed the cause of death as pneumonia and sickle cell, but Conrad said numerous tests by doctors at the Bustamante Children's Hospital prior to her death, found nothing wrong with Shanice.
He said he and Shanice's mother were in a taxi with her en route to the hospital to pick up the results of the latest test done on her, when she died in their arms.
He said he found his daughter's illness strange and that on the day she died she kept telling her mother about a person in the ceiling of the house - that no one else could see. He said after his daughter's death, vendors who sell in front of the school told him that every year a student from the grade three classroom, which his daughter was assigned to, dies. Conrad has still not recovered from his daughter's sudden and mysterious death.
Even while he struggles to come to grips with this tragic loss, three other parents are caught in the throes of a strange malady that has befallen their young daughters. King, 38, whose daughter has been ill for almost three weeks. Paulette said someone from the school called to tell her that her daughter took ill and she asked them to send her home when she felt better, as she was at work at the time. She said she sent her daughter back to school the day after as she seemed to have recovered. She received a call again while she was at work to inform her that her daughter had 'dropped down' during devotion and was screaming and jumping all over the place.
She said when she went to collect her, she was complaining for pains in her feet and she could not stand up. She took her to the doctor and was given injections. She said while her daughter can now stand, she has still been behaving strangely, particularly when anyone attempts to pray for her. She said she would bite and spit and scream during the prayer.
She said doctors at the University Hospital of the West Indies carried out numerous tests on her daughter including a brain scan and a psychiatric evaluation and told her that they found nothing wrong with her. She said one of the doctors finally recommended that she take her to a church for prayer.
A 73 year-old lady who said she has been assisting Paulette to care for her daughter for the past five years said the child has named out the seven demons that she said have possessed her. She said the child has broken up a cross that was placed before her and torn up bibles.
She said the little girl carries on conversations with the demons whom she has named as Willie, Clive, Lilly, Chum, Liver, Mad Cow and Rotten Belly.
Paulette said her daughter has been referring to the seven demons ever since a few days after she became ill and told them that a man dressed in a long black coat was coming towards her. They said she cried out for "Jesus," but exclaimed that the man retreated but came back with six others.
Paulette is beside herself with worry and has since lost her job as a clerk in a store downtown because she has not been able to attend work regularly since her daughter became ill.
Yesterday she told THE STAR her daughter laid motionless for most of the day on Tuesday and only moved slightly and showed any sign of life after persons prayed for her for several hours.
"She lay down stiff, cold an' not responding to anything," she said.
Two others ill
Paulette said the principal of the school, Rohan Walker and another employee called her and told her that two other students had also become ill while at school.
When THE STAR visited the school on Wednesday, an employee of the school confirmed that a student had become ill the day before and was acting strangely and was sent home after her parents were summoned. The employee also disclosed that another student had become ill and was also acting strangely shortly before the news team arrived claiming that she saw someone in the ceiling of the classroom. The news team was told that a pastor was summoned and he prayed with the students in grade three before the children were sent home.
The principal however, would not deny or confirm the incidents.
Efforts to contact Dr. Dane Levy whom THE STAR was told is the Chairman of the school board were unsuccessful. THE STAR was also told by parents of the children that Dr. Levy had treated all the students when they became ill initially.
THE STAR visited the school again yesterday and a grade three teacher admitted that a prayer meeting had been held in the grade three classroom the day before but said that was not unusual as "prayer meetings are held at the school from time to time." She further stated that Dr. Levy had visited the school yesterday and indicated that there was nothing mysterious about the children's illnesses and there was a medical explanation for their ill health. When she was asked for the explanation, she said she told her he was still waiting on the results of tests that had been carried out on the girls.
An eight-year-old boy who is the classmate of the little girls confirmed that persons had come to his classroom on Wednesday and prayed for one of his classmates.
"Some people came and said that there were demons flying and that they had come to heal somebody in the class. They anointed all the children in the class," the little boy said.
Both Paulette and Conrad told THE STAR that they feel that the school should remove the students from the ill-fated class room and place them elsewhere in the school.

Duppy attack

A PRISONER AT the Santa Cruz police lockup, in St. Elizabeth, is now in fear of his life after he was allegedly attacked by a 'ghost' inside his jail cell recently.
The 'duppy attack' victim, Aurey Brown, 21, of Maggoty, St. Elizabeth, along with the two other prisoners who were inside the same cell, were all taken before the Santa Cruz Resident Magistrate's court last week, to tell their tale.
"I was inside the cell when I felt a duppy fighting with me, and then I started to cry for help," Brown told the court.
The other prisoners concurred with Brown's supernatural tale, telling the court that during the night they were awakened by loud cries and shouts for help. The prisoners claimed they saw their cell mate fighting his way out of a tangle with a "big white woman," who disappeared as they began shouting at it.
They say an alarm was made, and the cell guards came to their assistance. Brown, who was crying to be removed from the cell, was found with several long cuts across his back.
Brown, who was charged with felonious wounding, after he allegedly chopped his girlfriend during a dispute early this year, claims that the ghost was sent by relatives of his girlfriend, as revenge for his alleged attack.
"A me girlfriend father a do this to me, because him tell me se me nah go get weh with this," Brown told the court.
Whispers and comments of ridicule from skeptics in the courtroom were immediately silenced when Brown removed his shirt to reveal several long cuts to his back. After seeing the injuries, the court ordered that he get immediate medical attention.
Despite tears and pleas from Brown for him to be granted bail, RM Andrea Thomas denied his request and ruled that he remain in custody. He returns to court on July 24.

DADDY DUPPY INSIDE GIRL?
A 13-YEAR-OLD child from Douglas Castle in Kellits, Clarendon, has been possessed by ghosts, friends and family say.
The child has been reportedly possessed since 2003 by her father's ghost and other spirits. When possessed, Dawn* is said to 'pass out', foam at the mouth, run quickly, threaten to kill herself, talk in different voices and also make predictions.
Friends say when her father's ghost is in her, she does not respond to her name. "When di spirit inna har, yuh caan call her ...,yuh haffi call her papa," Sadian, a friend said.
Her episodes have frightened her family and pushed them to try everything and anything to save her. Dawn has been to the St. Ann's Bay hospital many times and has been seen by many specialists across the island. She stayed in Lime Hall with her aunt for a while so that she could get spiritual intervention from a church in St. Ann's Bay.
Joan, Dawn's mother said that via the telephone she heard something strong come out of her daughter while the church prayed for her. "Mi sister call mi and seh 'Listen to dis', and mi hear di church a pray fi har. When di church pray, mi hear like waan big breeze blow weh dung deh!" she said.
'BLACK OUT'
This they say was the point at which the spirit left Dawn's body, but the spirit seems to continue to return. She continued to 'black out' and her spells got worse. "My sista call mi and seh she acting strange. Sometimes she by herself and she just gone and sometimes she just tek off and she have to get help to chase her," Joan said.
Friends of Dawn from the community say they too often have to chase her, sometimes in a car because it is difficulty to catch her on foot. "She is a girl weh caan run and when di sprit inna har a drive wi haffi drive har down," Donnette another friend said.
PROTECTING HER
These spirits often lead her to the river where she intends to drown herself. Her dead father, the residents say, has said he has been trying to ward off the spirits but he has got too old to manage.
Unlike the other sprits, when Dawn's dead father possesses her, he is said to be protecting her. He has reportedly said his reason for possessing his daughter is to ensure that she gets her rightful inheritance which he left for her in his will. He died in 2001 at 84.
The tale spins even further as reports are that her father has worked through his daughter making it possible for her to see the future.
Dawn had reportedly predicted the death of a young man in Kingston, however her father's sprit has refused to share the lottery numbers despite requests, stating that he is a Christian and does not support gambling.
In the meantime, her mother is hoping that the cause of her daughter's problems will be discovered soon as she is running out of money and options.
Joan says her daughter is clueless about what is happening to her. "When she black out she nuh know what happen," she said.
Dawn, who has missed school since January, started attending again about two weeks ago.
THE STAR news team tried to talk with her when we visited the community, however she was in class and the team had problems reaching her via telephone.
