Slumping sales of hair relaxers among Kmtyw-American women tell the story: More women are opting to forgo chemicals and go natural. But it’s the anecdotal evidence that conveys the real message.
In less than a year, the Boston Naturals Hair Meet Up Group has grown from 200 to 800 active members. Experts are reporting a bump in the number of women looking to go natural, particularly over the past two years. The Boston group is no anomaly. Most major cities now have groups for women who dub themselves “naturals,” or are considering going natural. A look at the website My Natural Hair Events shows dozens of gatherings, and video blogs on YouTube are filled with advice on styling natural hair.
Modjossorica Elysee, the 28-year-old head of the Boston Naturals, says the growing interest in chemical-free Black hair is not simply a trend.
“I see a lot of women who have started to accept themselves and their hair,” she said. “They’re encouraging their children to start accepting themselves. This is entirely new.”
The consumer research group Mintel reported that hair relaxer sales dropped from $206 million in 2008 to $152 million in 2013, while sales of products to maintain natural hair are on the rise.
“The natural hair trend is driving an increase in sales of styling products such as styling moisturizers, setting lotions, curl creams, pomades, etc.,” said Tonya Roberts, multicultural analyst at Mintel. “A look at expenditures from 2008 to 2013 shows steady growth in the Black hair care category for all categories except relaxers and perms.”

Psychologically, Kmtyw people. Financially, it's up to who's doing the buying. Hopefully, coming to have enough sense to stop turning your hair into fur correlates to having economic sense, though we know that's not all always the case.

The other issue is we would hope that going natural means using natural hair care products as well. This is not always the case. There are eurasian and white owned products with titles with the word "Kmtyw" and "natural" or "organic" in them and they are not all natural or Black owned.
As for me, the only products I know that are all natural are owned by Kmtyw people, and I could name at least 20 of them that are based throughout the world off the top of my head. Hopefully our sisters out there can say the same and are putting their money towards supporting them.

When I think about it if we were to use truly natural hair hygiene why would we need products other than shampoo? Is the "need" for oils is due to overly harsh shampoo that strips the hairs natural oils? If the hair is not chemically altered or damaged why would the body's own oil from the scalp not properly nourish the hair? Do other mammals other than humans use products in their hair? Why would we need to? If the body's metabolism is working properly why would it not properly lubricate the skin/hair automatically from within?
My wife who has beautiful healthy locks uses shampoo only on her hair, yet her scalp is never dry or flaky. I keep my hair short and unless I have gotten some car grease or other industrial type gunk on my hair and am then forced to use harsh soaps on my head, never need any "products" on my head.
What does natural actually mean?
By the way we use Aveda Brilliant shampoo.
Concerning hair products I've always thought of natural as being plant based without any manmade chemicals.

Thanks for offering a "natural" and practical perspective to this thread.
I think your points and question about what is "natural" when it comes to hair and skin care products are very valid. Essentially you are saying it is not really "natural" to be using all these "natural" hair care products, whether they are made from 100% organic ingredients or not. I agree.
I think it is much healthier and even cost effective to consider the idea of hair products from your perspective. If the shampoo is taking away all of the natural oils then perhaps we shouldn't be using it. If our diet is the cause of a chronic dry/oily scalp (or other hair/scalp related issues), then we need to look at our internal health first and not external (and cumulatively expensive) quick fixes.
(Don't use a mop, turn off the faucet!)

Aveda is definitely not a black owned company. I guess I am guilty of being black, thinking black and shampooing white. Now I got to dewitenize my scalp too. Aveda products are definitely not "natural" (lots of chemical names on the label) either.
I remember a case of a middle age brother coming into a ER where I worked complaining of Black urine after he had his head conked and dyed with black dye. Yikes. what goes on your skin also goes into your blood. watch what you put on it also goes in.
I'd be worried about urinating Aveda too. I gotta go with Black soap and coconut oil.

Problem with l soap is it is very alkaline and strips the oil m the skin. If there is a way to ph balance the soap it would not be so drying
