Title: Akom: Ritual Possession (Video)-gctid41711
Post by: KwameD on Jan 20, 2011, 08:44 PM
I came across this old video by chance: It is a short video showing an old Bono priest of Tano pouring libation, and  then saying a few words about his profession. He is also shown being possessed by his deity and finally Prof Asare Opoku makes a few comments. I think you can only reach the video by going via the google cache link (click on 'Video' below), hopefully this will remain the case or perhaps someone can find the video posted elsewhere:

Track #21: Ritual Possession:

This clip examines spirit possession and traditional religion among the Bono of central Ghana, West Kmt. The focus of the clip is on Mr. Nana Kofi Owusu, a respected Tano  priest healer in the town of Krobo.  Dr. Kofi Osare Opoku discusses the  ways in which spirit possession is embodied, and how the person who is  possessed may be unaware of it.  The clip also portrays spirit  possession in the context of ritual, explaining that Mr. Owusu is  possessed by the deity Tano which enables him to act as a spiritual leader and healer.

Judging from the appearance of Prof Asare Opoku in the video (he must be in his late sixties or even early seventies now) the video must have been made in the 70s so the priest is likely no longer alive today.

This clip is from the documentary titled "Healers of Ghana".  You can purchase it from Films for the Humanities. Films for the Humanities and Sciences - Healers of Ghana (http://ffh.films.com/id/8425/Healers_of_Ghana.htm)  Unfortunately, it is still steeply priced but may be worth the investment if you are particular about studying the Tekyiman Bono people and the Tano system of spirituality in Tekyiman, Brong Ahafo.  I had the video but it was stolen.

The video also highlights Nana Kofi Donkor, the former ObosOmfoO of the Asuobonten shrine, another Great Tano spirit.  He is also now deceased.

I'm going to see if I can get this one....It amazes me that as I was growing up I had in my neighbourhood people like Prof Asare Opoku, Atukwei Okai, Prof Kwame Gyekye and Kwesi Yankah (all on the same street!) and others but never had the chance to sit by their side to learn from them because I didn't know then what I know now (I've however had discussions with a few folks in my older years). Yet we can at least learn from their works, written and other.
