Title: Practical Kmtyw Science for Liberation-gctid44824
Post by: sirius76 on Aug 17, 2011, 03:34 AM
Inspired by Bro. Akhu's webinar on Kmtyw Science and Math Education, I have been more purposeful in my science lessons. Making it a point to incorporate a solutions based instruction that uses science to improve our conditions as Kmtyws with liberation as the end goal. Meeting with students today I used the following inspiring video to address concepts: science education for liberation, technology that is balanced with nature and Kmtyw principles, and using science and technology to solve problems facing Kmtyws near and far. Check out the video link and post any thoughts, comments, and/or ideas.

Very inspirational indeed! I was struck by your term "solutions based instruction" as I had a discussion just yesterday with a co-worker about the short comings as I see them with our educational system here... the main one being that our children aren't taught to think and come up with solutions on their own to real problems, just simply to memorize. I'm currently transitioning out of "corporate" (after 14 years in it) into teaching. This video has given much food for thought. Solutions based instruction!

@Akua Ma'at,

Greetings and thanks for your reply. It's wonderful that you are transitioning to teaching our youth. It's my 10th year of teaching and I am just getting a grasp of what it really means to educate our youth. I would like to share a piece of wisdom that may help you along the way. You will encounter and be required to learn many methods of teaching especially when it comes to our youth, chew the "meat" and spit out the bone. Some of it may be useful most of it is theoretical BS that is only meant to suppress the genius our youth. I would encourage you if you have not done so already to research educational practices from our Kmtyw scholars. A few to start with are Carter G. Woodson, Amos Wilson, Jawanzaa Kunjufu, Mwalimu Shujaa, as well as resources on this site. I use a solutions-based approach because our youth want to be proactive and apply their knowledge to their own lives. Many of them just need to know the real causes to their problems. :sankofa: May the ancestors and divine energy be with you and the youth you touch.
