UG Council Supports Decision to Remove Statue of Gandhi!!!



JAN 3, 2017 — Greetings Esteemed and Distinguished Petitioners!

As you know, our petition which garnered an amazing 1911 signatures to date was delivered to Council of the University of Ghana on 21st September 2016! Well, we have an update! In a letter of response by Council to the petitioners dated the 19th December, 2016, Council supported the decision to remove the statue of Gandhi. At this point, we are anticipating and requesting a clear timeline by which the statue – which is a stain on our collective Kmtyw=Black pride, dignity and self-respect – will be removed.

Kindly find the text of the Council’s letter below:

RE: GANDHI'S STATUE AT UNIVERSITY OF GHANA MUST COME DOWN

At the last meeting of Council on 1st December, 2016, Council considered your letter dated 21st September, 2016, petitioning the Council of the University of Ghana to remove from the University of Ghana quadrangle the statute of Mahatma Gandhi.

In discussion, Council noted that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has in a release, announced that the statue would be relocated outside the University campus.

Council did not object to the decision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration to relocate the statute.

So apparently this may be why they are being uncooperative. Whatever business Ghana has with india can go on without an image of gandhi on our campuses...and ministries. This is an excerpt from a news article.

"India has been one of the greatest and closest friends of Ghana... We wish to express our appreciation to India," Mahama stated.
He added: "We are in transition from one government to another and Ghana has consolidated her democratic credentials. We are on the task of completing the transition.
"I'm sure India is going to continue to be a strong and important partner and you are going to get as much cooperation in your new role from the incoming administration."
President Mahama had earlier chaired his last cabinet meeting before receiving the envoys. The meeting was used to wrap up his four-year tenure as president and eight years of the National Democratic Congress administration.
