I wish you all well on your wellness journey.

I'm working on increasing my water intake and getting exercise at least 4 days a week. Started doing HIIT workouts 3 days a week plus walking these Tanzania hills 2-3 days.

I've got to improve my endurance and cardiovascular strength so I can walk up to the next village easily and ride my bike with Nana Kwaku.

I'm 170 (The heaviest I've ever been) and 45 pounds over weight and obese by definition.

That changes tomorrow!

So here is my grocery haul. I have organic, bananas,  blueberries, apples strawberries, bell peppers, greens, zucchini, cucumbers, carrots
grape tomatoes, honey, oatmeal green tea, and salad dressings/Kashi cereal/Kale (not pictured). I also purchased walnuts, a watermelon and a pineapple, dried cranberries. I have frozen organic mixed fruit for smoothies
My  plan is to do green smoothies, protein shakes with almond milk. Entree salads with mixed greens topped with fruit, nuts or veggies. I also picked up three cases of spring water. I have Flat tummy water steeping now. I plan to work out 5 days this week and eat clean. My goal is to wean myself off sugar as much as possible. I'm not vegan or vegetarian but the goal is to incorporate as many meatless meals as possible. I'd like to lose 20 lbs by 6/16!  And then another 10-15 by September. "Before" pics coming tomorrow. *I think*

I'm glad everyone is trying to do the healthy thing. Looks like most of you or all of you are focused on losing weigh. I'm looking the other way. I'm working on strength gains, which usually correlate with gaining weigh. (Although if it were possible to gain strength without gaining weight I'd take it.) Hence my 2.5 year plan as I mentioned earlier. Being over weigh has never been an issue for me. @NKO what would you suggest for this scenario?

I think maintaining proper weight is needed to feel good about ones appearance. This is important to self esteem and self love. Seeking to conform to standards of weight portrayed in the mass media is however unhealthy.

A certain amount of body fat has protective value in survival situations that however rarely present themselves.

Carrying extra weight is problematic in that it adversely impacts endurance and speed which are important in survival and battle situations. Extra fat has a whole list of negative effects on ones health.

However if the focus is health then eating in alignment with your body constitution with intent to properly nourish oneself with every swallow as opposed to entertaining or mollifying oneself addictively is the basis for health.

Having adequate adequate muscle mass for strength, flexibility, balance, power, endurance and coordination for survival and self defense and to protect the joints is key. Bulking up to look a certain way is vain and not about health as is getting skinny for the same purpose.

I think weight is an issue that takes care of itself when one has healed ones food addiction issues, has gained proper respect for ones body temple, learned what is proper for human nutrition and has healed the mind and emotions and spirit to the point where they will only put what is good for the body, mind and spirit into ones body.

To me it makes sense to go on a program to heal ones dysfunctional eating patterns, heal ones food addictions, reinforce ones nutritional status and detoxify oneself in the process. The program if effective can be used periodically to reinforce and improve already good habits.

That is why I recommend juice fasting because it is the safest, easiest to maintain, and the most powerful tool for doing all of that and in the process loosing weight and getting healthier.

See me and Ama's  new book published last month The Optimum Fast as well as our online juice fasting multimedia video training at our web site.

Ha! Not a chance! I promise I will enjoy every morsel of these healthy foods and think of you.
I am so excited to get started this morning!

Abibifahodie

@NKO & everyone,
Insightful post. I agree that a focus on weight alone is problematic. I think you're right about your points on bulking up and getting skinny as well.

I shared in an earlier post on this thread that the focus, from a food perspective, should be on consuming a nutrient-centered diet. A lifestyle that includes nutrients-centered diet combined with healthy physical activity.

There are some societal standards around weight that are unhealthy. It is also important to understand where some of those concepts come from.

A person's biological nature is to sustain itself and procreate. It's natural for a person to look for healthy genes to procreate with.

Fat, acne, gas, bad breath, balding scalps are the body's check engine and dashboard warning lights to show you that something is wrong by intentionally disfiguring you in a way that would decrease your chances of finding someone seeking to procreate with healthy genes.

Warped eureurasiaan standards of beauty should not be a focus. However, we need to also be careful that we're not so anti-white that we just go to an opposite extreme that is also unhealthy in that it ignores physical appearance changes nature put in place as warning signals.

I theorize that if we think back hundreds of thounited snakesnds of years. There was a time where there were no mirrors. If you weren't in touch with yourself, and something was wrong, there weren't mirrors around to tell you. The best way to let you know you were engaged in unhealthy habits would be for the body to show it in external ways that would make you repulsive to others so that you would be motivated to alter your behavior in order to be accepted.

In an effort to create more mass confusion, eureurasiaan society says, ignore physical warning signs, ignore your natural revulsion to an unhealthy body, and just accept everyone for who they are.

It's an ideology that promotes mediocrity. If you convince people that unhealthy behavior should not be criticized, then they will find ways to rationalize their faults when their insecurities build. Once people begin to rationalize their faults then it'll be much easier to control them.

I do think it's important to talk about weight for the same reasons you pointed out.

Many people get confused when consuming one bad food doesn't have an acute, immediate, effect.

Excess weight is not just a physical representation of an unhealthy lifestyle. It's your body's private collection of toxins, unhealthy fat, undigested/ indigestible matter, rotting carcasses (if you eat meat), waste, byproducts, and fecal waste build up.

The chronic, cumulative effects over time, of this lifestyle can have fatal consequences.

As Dr Kamau Kambon talks about, the ongoing practice of unhealthy lifestyle choices is best described in a term he coined called "subtle suicide".

Thinking of it in this way, one can look at excess weight as physical remnants of mini suicide attempts.

The whole idea about getting healthy and staying healthy is really about just being healthy. It's critical to recognize the concepts we consume that perpetuate an unhealthy lifestyle so that we're mentally armed to break down those concepts to undo it do.

Sorry for the long meandering post. I probably shouldn't have done this using voice to text on my phone. 😊
