[Mani Kongo]

Zombo is a village and municipality in the province of Uige, Angola.



Uíge (pronounced: "Weej"), one of the eighteen Provinces of Angola, is located in the northwestern part of the country.
Its capital city is of the same name. Municipalities within the province include Zombo, Quimbele, Damba, Mucaba,
Bungu, Macocola, Bembe, Buengas, Sanza Pombo, Alto Cauale, Puri, Negage, Quitexe, Ambuila and Songo.



During the Middle Ages, the Uige Province was the heartland of the Kongo Kingdom.
The Bakongo North and South of the Kongo river were all part of this Kingdom, a centralized monarchy which for given periods of time also dominated part of the Ambundu further to the South.
The kings lived in the city of Mbanza-Kongo which had a population of about 50,000 in the 16th century.
They ruled with great authority in the region for several centuries. The knowledge of metallurgy among the
Bakongo was renowned as they became famous as iron blacksmiths; their king was even called the "Blacksmith King".



"The Zoombo dialect is the modern descendant of the 'San Salvador' variety of Kongo written of by W. Holman Bentley in the Dictionary and Grammar of the Kongo Language, first published in 1887;
.....It is spoken in the north of Angola, and by refugees from the original centres who have fled to the Zaire.
.....The present course was prepared with the assistance of a first language speaker of Zoombo Kongo, Sr. Joao Makoondekwa,
.....Language has a special place in Kongo culture; they are rightly proud of their own, ....."

Do the audio files for the Kongo Language Course: Maloongi Makikongo still exist? It's Almost impossible to effectively study from the course without knowing the pronunciation. Any info would be much appreciated!

Yènge (Peace), I don't know if they still exist and if they are still available knowing it was published almost 30 years ago. I just sent an email to the University of Wisconsin to ask about these recorded materials. We should know soon enough.
