Orunmila, Osunfunmilayo his Apetebi, and Iku
By Chief FAMA

The decoded message from an Odu Ifa says in part:
"Iye se Orunmila. Orunmila wo Iku, o wo Osunfunmilayo, o ni, `Koda, Odu Ifa ti o wun rorun to bee to je wipe obinrin le kii.'"
"A situational anxiety temporarily impaired Orunmila's memory. Orunmila looked from Iku to Osunfunmilayo his apetebi, and said, `The Odu Ifa that was revealed is so simple that a woman* can recite it.'"

The multifacetedness of Ifa in human life is its ability to touch on every subject and on every condition. Sometime, a perfected task that suddenly fails makes the expert to wonder and think deeply about the cause of the failure; sometimes, too, a failed routine action can make an intellectual look deficient. Orunmila alludes to these kinds of situation in the above statement when he was face to face with Iku and had to pass the tests posed to him by Iku. As should be expected, Orunmila was fully aware of the challenge before him; so was Osunfunmilayo his apetebi. Going before Iku, and having Iku spellbound to the point that he abandoned his initial plan of havoc, required a concerted team effort. Initially unaware of the presence of Osunfunmilayo his apetebi, Orunmila included her in the day's task, and the result was the usual success for which Ifa is always known.

Sometimes on our human level, we feel we have the answers to simple challenges that face us. In reality, this feeling may be true and it may also be inadequate. Knowing when to stop and ask for help, or accept an offer of help, is part of the growth in human evolution. Knowing when to garner help is also part of our daily responsibilities. And, we should not discount the source of such help, be it from a toddler or from a sage. Since the most generically sought after thing in life ire (good luck) in all its definitions, may Odumare zeal this fervent wish of us humans with ase. Ase.
