This thread will be a review of the various Akan dictionaries I own and where to get them. If you own other Akan Dictionaries, please share, and if you own any of the ones reviewed, please share your thoughts as well.

First up,

Comprehensive English-Twi (Akuapem) Dictionary by Dr. Kofi Oteng-Gyang (2014).
The great thing about Dr. Kofi's Dictionary is that it could easily be found online at E-Stores like Amazon.com at a reasonable price ($20). "A ComprehensiveEnglish-Twi Dictionary" is comprehensive with a total of 411 pages and the size of a science textbook.

Base upon my research, Dr. Kofi is a successful Optometrist in Atlanta. Dr. Kofi has written several science books (all found on Amazon)and is an avid preacher of teaching the sciences in Twi.

In the introduction titled "Nkyerɛkyerɛmu", Dr. Kofi says,

"Sayense yɛ nyansasɛm ne osuahu ɛwɔ ne kasa ne ne mmara. Yɛde ne mmara ahorow no atoto yɛn Twi kasa mmara ho ama yɛanya Twi tɛkrɛma a ɛfata. Ɛnyɛ yɛn nhoma yi botae sɛ ɛbɛkyerɛ Twi kasa mmara. Mmom, nkekaho ne ntease pa akasa no anya no na yebeyi adi wɔ ha."

The word "sayense" is Dr. Kofi's rewriting of the word science in Twi. I noticed that this was the case with some of the scientific and medical terms in the book. For example, Dr. Kofi translates Antidiurectic Hormone as "Antidiyuretik Hormone; hormone bi a ɛkyerɛ nsu dodow a nnipadua hia sɛ eyi gu mfikyiri sɛ dwensɔ". Possibly, we do not have accepted words for words like Hormone or Antidiurectic in Twi. However, in my other Akan Dictionary, "Advanced Akan Dictionary" by J.O. Anane, hormone is translated as "ahobaa" (semen).

Other scientific or medical terms:

Aortic Valve: aorta koma paip (pipe), koma mu paip bi a emu bue ma mogya foforo sen fi koma mi kɔ aorta mu.

Atmospheric pressure: atmosfiɛ presha, wim presha, presha dodow awim mframa de hyɛ asase so.

Atom: Atom, ade ketekete

Central Nervous System: Tikora ne akyidua mu hon nhyehyɛe, hon a ɛhyehyɛ tikora ne akyidua mu ne wɔn dwumadi. Yɛtaa frɛ eyi sɛ adwene ne atenka-sɛm nhyehyɛe tiiriw.

Eye Ulcer: Aniwamkuru, kura a ɛtɔ aniwa so ana aniwa no mu baabi.

Law of Flotation: Nsu-nɛnsode mmara, ade bi a desniti so sen nsu ko a ɛda mu no de no sian kɔ fam, nanso sɛ ade ko no density yɛ ketewa sen saa nsu a ɛda mu no de a, saa ade no tum tɛn nsu no ani. Sɛ ade ko no nso tebea te sɛ obonto a, ɛtɛn nsu no ani.
Gravity: animduru, asɛm bi mmuduru

Overall a good dictionary to own for Akuapem Twi Learners. Also if you're looking for a scientific or medical dictionary, this is a great book.

The problem with such dictionaries is lack of authors consulting other dictionaries.
