I'd recommend that you plan to acquaint yourself with the language and Ghana in general as part of your plan. I came here through SJ back in the day and that experience culminated in me getting the best PhD award here, work here and, most recently, citizenship. I know folks who don't get the lay of the land first and who don't last. Especially if you are coming with your daughter, come, experience, learn and stay on having gotten a solid foundation.

To your question, the traffic to and from Tema is legendarily horrific and the toll takes its toll over time. Unless you plan on doing everything in Tema, it may be an inconvenience and you may want to be in a nice neighborhood on the Accra side.

You might want to visit Tanzania or some other countries as well. My wife and I repatriated here last year and we love it. The Arusha area has a lot to offer with perfect climate and mountain air and wonderful people. The outdoors life is amazing and Nairobi is a 6 hr $30 bus ride away.

What I'm saying is Kmt is a big place and Ghana is cool but don't decide where you will repatriate before you visit there. You want to be an immigrant not a refugee.

I was all set to move to Ghana and we found that we liked Tanzania better.  Ghana giving citizenship to diasporic Kmtyws is way cool. I'm praying TZ follows suit.

Wherever you go make sure you get with the notion that you are happy living like an Kmtyw not an expatriate. You want to repatriate not expatriate.

Do you have the money to sustain yourself once you arrive in Ghana? Don't plan on getting a job, take your business with you.

Make sure wherever you go you look before you leap.
Remeber leaping across the ocean is a long way to leap without a good hard look. It is a long way to see across the ocean. Make sure you spend as much time where you are planning to repatriate to as possible before you close up shop in the us. Multiple trips is wise.  Carefully plan your landing. Make sure you have friends, contacts and aquaintences who can help guide you. Be sure you have a clear plan for sustaining yourself financially. Know that the grass is always greener on the other side. Know that it is very possible maybe even likely that where you first land may not be where you put down roots.

But know and be comforted by the knowledge that if you can make it in Babylon you can make it in Zion as well.

It seems you are ready to leave the u.s. and you are set in your decision to go to Ghana, site unseen. Although I agree with looking before you leap, it is not impossible for leapers to do well, especially if you've done it before. Also if you're familiar with the Caribbean you may have a clearer understanding of what living in Ghana would be like. Either way, we can help to assist you.

In terms of housing, it depends on your budget and needs. On the Accra end my suggested areas are the Legon areas, which are: North Legon, West Legon, or East Legon, or their surrounding neighborhoods: Haatso, Dome, Kwabenya, Ashale Botwe, etc. You can google map them to see.

Legon is "safer." It also gives you options to access both local markets as well the more commercial malls. There are plenty of schools to choose from for your daughter, although we would highly suggest our Kmtyw centered School, which is the only one in Accra, or, home schooling. The curriculums here are not ideal for our children.

I need at least two bedrooms 3 would be nice.   I would t have a car so I would need to be close to market.   Tell me what the fees are for your school?  I was thinking about no more than 300cedis for rent.   I hear so areas are cooler than others.

From what I know of 300 cedis would more likely get you 1 bedroom inside someone's house.  A 2 or 3 bedroom apartment or house in the mentioned areas would start at 500 cedis- if you're lucky, and up into u.s. dollar amounts. Be careful also that multiple bedrooms rentals for 500-800 cedis in the areas I mentioned may also be an indication of "lower quality" (incomplete, untiled, poor or no plumbing/electricity, rodents/bugs/infestation, etc). Also, I'm sure the sister you talked to mentioned that they may request up to 2 years of the rent money in advance. You can, of course, negotiate the price and request for monthly payments.

The fees for the school are 800 cedis per month for a full time student. We also accomodate home schoolers, so we also have part timers at a sliding scale. We encourage parental involvement and would reduce the costs for teaching, volunteering, and referrals. Multiple children also recieve a discount. Parents with experience in teaching "core" subjects can have all fees waived for at least one child.
