I had an interesting conversation today with my nieces, their boyfriends, my oldest son and his girlfriend.  It started when one of my nieces stated she was headed to Minnesota for a multi organization discussion on solving the problem of black violence in our communities. I asked probing questions intentionally to spark their thoughts on the solutions on the table.  They all talked about poor education, single moms, lack of positive role models, etc etc.  Then I gave the analogy of the spiderweb and the spider where all the symptoms are the web and the cause is the spider.  I asked what solution is on the table to address the spider?  I then asked who historically would they say had a solution to address the spider and who addressed the webs.  Very interesting responses. They already know me so they give the oh boy here we go lol.  But today they were engaging. One of my nieces boyfriend said we don't have the leaders with enough power to bring that to the table.  One niece said there are a lot of factors to consider. Then I asked if they had to say....who benefits from our killing each other, our lack of knowledge, our focusing on the symptoms.  

We plan to have more meetings to discuss.

Way to kick the truth to the young Black youth! Thanks to the late Dr. Khalid Abdul Muhammad for that analogy. I'm curious; who did they say addressed the spider and who did they say addressed the webs?

My eldest niece boyfriend offered Malcom X, one said Martin Luther king as addressing the spider... when I asked what spider he said white supremacy and institutional racism. When I said that's a web they didn't understand.  I finally said Nat Turner was a spider killer the look on their faces was priceless.  "Are you saying kill them Uncle Kevin?"  I am saying that has to be on the table.  Then we started talking about historical realities of the Berlin conference, apartheid, convict leasing, Jim Crow, and other spider tactics where they are clear in their intentions.  

I wish I had recorded the discussion.  All in all I think they at least have a new thought to explore.  One of the boyfriends asked for some book titles.   I offered Amos wilson as a starting point.

Oh yeah one said they watch Khalid Muhammad all the time as well.
