Towards Ghana Citizenship for Diasporans-gctid198057

I'm posting information about a meeting that took place yesterday August 25th 2016, at the University of Ghana, Legon.

The information is my summary of the main points of a meeting where members of the Kmtyw diaspora gathered to discuss the possibility of gaining Ghana citizenship.

We've come to a significant point in our story where The possibility of gaining citizenship with exemption due to our status as returnees is a high possibility. With the assistance of the secretary to the president of Ghana, Ambassador Quartey, those who apply will have their request put forward to the highest ranking government official, currently President John Mahama.

Being that this is election year it puts us at a sensitive and time sensitive time to move this forward. Those in Ghana are urged to apply as soon as possible.

Report of the Meeting for Kmtyws of the Diaspora to Obtain Ghanaian Citizenship
Meeting Minutes
August 25, 2016
Call to order
Dr. Maulana called to order the meeting of the various organizations representing the Kmtyw Diaspora including Ministry of the Future, the Kmtyw American Association of Ghana, Fihankra, and individuals at 12:30PM on August 25, 2016 at The Institute of Kmtyw Studies Old Seminar Room, University of Ghana, Legon.
Roll call
Secretary to Dr Maulana took written record of attendees. No formal roll call was given, as this was the first meeting of this nature, with the purpose of finding out the interests of the attendees.
Purpose of Meeting
The main purpose of the meeting was to present all interested parties with information about obtaining Ghanaian citizenship if they are of Kmtyw descent. Special application forms would need to be filled out, which would be dropped off at Dr.Kambon's office at the University of Ghana campus, Institute of Kmtyw Studies, room 115, no later than Thursday, September 1, 2016. Dr. Maulana would then take the forms to Ambassador Kwesi Quartey, the current secretary to the president of Ghana, President Mahama for review and acceptance. (See more Info about Kwesi Quartey at link below)
Dr. Maulana expressed that the Mr. Quartey is knowledgeable of the history of those in the diaspora. The damage of the enslavement of Kmtyw people, as well as the desire for us to return to our mother land is well acknowledged by both him and to some degree, the president of Ghana. The secretary is empathetic to our needs, and wants to help, as stated back in April 2016, at the initial Ministry of the Future discussion that occurred at the University of Ghana.
Dr. Maulana also expressed the time sensitivity of this issue, which is that we are in election year, it is unknown as to whether the current governing parties who may be sympathetic to us now would be in position to assist us in obtaining citizenship thereafter. It is advised that since we have the current secretary who is willing and interested in helping the diasporic community, and is in direct position with the government parties who can make a decision, we must take advantage of it.
It is not currently known if exemption would be given to all who apply in the future (after 2016). The expectation is to give those of us who submit a form to the secretary an exemption. Once we are given citizenship we can then make a case for all Kmtyw diasporans who want citizenship in Ghana to obtain it.
The Plan
The plan is for the secretary to review our applications with the expectation that all applicants would be granted citizenship with exemption from current requirements of citizenship, which include but are not limited to the following: proof of residence in Ghana for 6 years or more, 6,000 ghc non-refundable payment for citizenship application form, copy of current residence visa, 2 or more letters of reference, fluency in a Ghanaian language, etc. (See appendix for the full document of requirements for current citizenship).
Copies of the form will be made into a pdf form that can be emailed to anyone else who was not an attendee at the meeting. The form must be printed out and a hard copy must be submitted.
Video of the meeting will be made available as unlisted on YouTube. This would be made available through a private link upon request.
Contact info- To drop off forms or obtain info on accessing video of the meeting contact Dr. Kambon 0249195150.

Filling Out the Form
Answer the questions as thoroughly as possible to the best of your ability.
Questions that may not apply to you should be not be skipped over. Write that it does not apply to you and why it does not apply.
For those who choose, a grievance letter may be attached to your form expressing your issues, concerns, experiences as a result of not having full citizenship rights in Ghana.
Be very through in answering questions concerning your contributions to Ghana, whether past activity, current activity, and/or future plans.
It was agreed that a cover letter addressed to Ambassador Quartey will be added to all the application, which will be written by Dr. Maulana.
Updates and Information
Dr. Maulana will be submitting the forms to the secretary after next week. Updates will be announced at the next Ministry of the Future meeting in 2 weeks. (Location, and exact date not stated)
