Have You Ever Gotten The Holy Ghost?-gctid28722

What is the "holy ghost/spirit?" What is its relationship to ancient tribal dance and rituals? Why does the holy spirit seem to visit certain individuals and/or cultural groups and not others? And do you believe people typically feign their spiritual experiences in church and other compaAmwle settings?

If you've ever evoked or been visited by a spirit via dance or some other means, describe your experience. What events led up to your trance-like state and how did this experience impact your life thereafter?

Greetings Queen Samiya     The holy ghost/spirit is when christian believers refer to that aspect of god that may "come upon" an individual if god chooses while that person is praying, singing and/or dancing.  It's believed that the spirit overtakes the person and they may "speak in tongues" they may move uncontrollably etc. Honestly just less than a year ago this WAS what I believed too.  I give thanks to my ancestors and TRUE friends for not allowing me to continue in my ignorance.    As I research, read, filter and then read some more, I'm still trying to understand the different times tribal dance is used to evoke ancient spirits and it's place in rituals.  One "trance-like" experience I've encountered was during a funeral for a close friend of mine.  The Kmtyw dance group that we're both members of did a tribute dance in her honor. I was responsible for doing a part of the dance that "represented her presence" then "transition".  There have been other things that have occurred I can only describe as "experiences" because I'm still new to understanding what is going on; trying to distinguish between emotion, "spiritual visits", grand imagination etc.    These experiences have changed my life because it is one of the reasons why I started to seek answers from other places instead of the bible.

Ebonysunflower,

I agree with what you are saying! On this forum, it's a video called Demons of Ghana. Have you watched, if you didn't watched, then please do, it would explains everything about the Holy Ghost. I am not off into the bible myself, but I do understand metaphisics.

For a good portion of my life I grew up with a Christian Foundation. I was raised in a black church where it was not only normal, but necessary for the jumping and the screaming and the speaking in tongues. I remember singing a solo in the choir and watching the elders of the church be so moved that they had to begin speaking in tongues. No matter the question i had about Christianity, it was made very clear, that i was going to be a Christian because my father and his whole family were Christians. so I grew up believing that i was going to hell unless I caught the Holy Ghost and spoke in tongues.

I never did catch the holy ghost, so, oh well.

I was never too fun with people doing the "Holy Ghost" in church. I find it very funny to me, because I know that it is fake when people are doing it to just get attention, now for those that are not faking it, well, I guess because of our ancestors don't want us to fall into that whiteman's believe (belief system).

I'm not sure if I've "caught the spirit" or not.

Like someone above mentioned, I get by the music at a service..

One time in particular, at first I had an overwhelming sadness and began crying uncontrollably. I don't remember much after that.

My family is very susceptible to accepting spirits, my mother especially.

I've only been to one Akom, but I remember consciously not letting myself really get into it because I was afraid of what would happen...sometimes I could feel myself slipping though. It's hard not to be affected by such a powerful experience like that.

I know the spirits are just visiting, but, I think I'd want to know more about how it happens...

Sister KaNisa,

I agree with you! Sometimes if we participate on inviting the spirits to take control of us, then it would happen, and we would be so unconscious of not knowing what is going on, now that is real, but for those that are faking it, well, they would be more fully aware what they are doing, especiallly a religion like Christianity, and how women would claim to have the "Holy Ghost" when they are running back and forth from all over the place.

I have one question and perhaps my general ignorance may be at blame here though it seems as though Afro-Spirit based systems do seem to have a Spirit/Holy Ghost if one choose to call it that system attached to it.  I wondered then why do those that practice traditional religions do not get the Holy Ghost when going to a Christian Church?  My next question is why do some Kmtyw Spiritual systems will/can go to a church though will not go to a Mosque?  Some even will not go to an Kemetic, Akan and Yoruba Spiritual event of which persons are either "Meditating or Communing with our ancestors.  It's very odd to me that some folk feel more comfortable going to a church then going to a Mosque or going to another alternative spiritual base.  It seems as though many persons have Christianized ways and they bring much of it into Kmtyw Spiritual systems.  I do not go to a church nor will I go to a Mosque though one thing that is for sure If I thought a black convert that would have my back I would believe that the Muslim would fight.  I didn't want to turn this into a Muslim or Christian dailogue or debate I wanted to address how even how we worship God has been tainted by eureurasiaans.  I've seen it and we need someone to ask the hard questions.

I'm not sure if I understand your questions, but here's an attempt at trying to offer an opinion:

I think people that do practice religions practice theirs alone. For example, a Christian will not go to a mosque because what goes on there is not what they believe in.

To us it wouldn't matter either way as most if not all religions are really just a system of control.

As far as the holy ghost is concerned, I'm not sure that all people are receptive to receiving spirits. I have the opinion that "the holy ghost" isn't specific or even really related to Christianity, it's just something that happens when your consciousness is open to it and you are exposed to a kind of "trigger" (ie. dancing, drums, music.)

Also, I think there's a difference between spirituality and religion. In a Christian system..it's almost as if spirits are considered "pagan" or "devilish", in traditional Kmtyw systems, they are normal and necessary.

I've only read a few books on traditional Kmtyw "religions"...but i have the impression they are more based on spirituality than religion.

I can only speak my opinion as a person who came from a Christian background. I know in my teaching, Christianity has a very strong belief that any other system is pegan and believers will be punished. So, not many Christians are open to the possibility of going checking out another belief system.

It has been my opinion that those who are able to catch spirits might be the ones who have tapped into their inner Divinity and have moved from the religious thought process to a spiritual awakening. I do agree with religion and spirituality are two very different things.

Yes, religion and spirituality are two different things because religion deals with just focus one believe in one particular thing or just focus one what someone or the system that would be strict on that particular belief. Spirituality is beyond that because it deals with spirits, it deals with believe in ourselves as whom we really are, it deals with practicing rituals not religions, and it also deals with our breath of life. That is what it means for the both of them. What really amazing is that a lot of people do not know about this kind of information spi + rituality (ritual) = spiruality, and spi or spirit also means spiral.  :reader:
