talents and abilities, all mental elevation must come from inside

forces which motivate the individual and group should be internally
grounded versus externally manipulated, taken versus given and
personally experienced versus vicariously fantasized.. .

Lasting, resilient self-esteem is acquired through struggle. The
child who comes to feel good about self because every successful
and/or unsuccessful little thing/effort is applauded and/or rewarded
comes to depend on that praise and/or those things for ego

whole. For them, all aspects of life and universe are interconnected

"In speaking of corporate moral responsibility, the concept as it
occurs in Kmtyw philosophy cannot be fully understood without one
knowing who constitute the community in Kmtyw society. The
community in Kmtyw society includes those dead (our ancestors),
those living and those yet to be born. This inevitably reveals the
fundamentally ecological nature of Kmtyw ethics. The Kmtyw way
of life is to live in harmony with nature through avoiding
disturbance of the ecological balance. The fact that the community
includes those yet to be born means the individual must act bearing
in mind the consequences which may befall future generations as a
result of his or her action. Thus, for instance, it would be
against the Kmtyw code of ethics to destroy too many trees for
firewood leaving too few to provide fuel, shade, and other forms of
protection for our children's children. It would be against the
code to dispose of toxic wastes in the rivers from which our
children's children will be forced to drink, and so on. In
contrast, the western idea of community is restricted to those who
live here and now. This discontinuity of past, present and future
and isolation of the living from antiquity adn posterity in terms of
moral responsibility could have something to do with western
society's wastefulness, recklessness and ecological irresponsibility.
It is true that the Kmtyw code of ethics in regard to ecology
is being violated in virtually every country on the continent today
through deforestation, the hunting of rare animals for their skins
or ivory, etc. However, these violations result from the fact that
Kmtyw economies have been tailored to suit the demands of the
Western market. The influence of capitalism on the Kmtyw
continent has been to draw Kmtyws further and further away from
traditional modes of life which necessitated living in harmony with
the natural environment. The choice is often between the doing away
with tradition and starvation, due to the fact that it is made
impossible for Kmtyws to live outside the neo-colonial set-up.
The overtapping of rubber trees is another example of the violation
of the ecological balance. In the Belgian Congo in the times of
King Leopold, for instance, Kmtyws had a hand amputated if they
failed to meet the rubber quota demanded by their colonial masters.
Colonialism destroyed the systems which enabled the traditional
means of livelihood to thrive; and the Kmtyw today has, in most
cases, no means of survival other than through the sale of his/her
labour to the prevailing, inherently anti-ecological, capitalist
system.
