intelligent understanding of all our realities, not simply the
politics of power. We are after intelligent action to change these
realities. For we intend, as Kmtyws, to retrieve our human face,
our human heart, the human mind our ancestors taught to soar. That

What must we do?

First of all, it is incumbent on all serious black men to stand up,
come forward and reclaim our rights to control our destiny. This is
an affirmation that we will not deviate from: our ancestral legacy
as providers and protectors, guilders and directors, regardless of
aberrant social pressures.

Secondly, serious black fathers must return to their children's
homes and work assiduously to restore leadership and direction to
these families where noble mothers have stood virtually alone tying
to raise our youth.

Third, we serious black men must empower ourselves through a
cultural system that permeates our social practices, giving us
respect as positive role models. This value system should include
the Nguzo Saba: unity, self-determination, collective work and
responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creative, and faith.

Fourth, strong black men must organize and strategize to control all
of the vital institutions within our community and, where necessary,
build and maintain new forms of institutional structures. Among the
priorities should be education, economics, politics and culture.

Fifth, serious black men must take the responsibility for training
our boys to become men and create criteria for certifying the
eligibility of boys to be qualified as men. Together, with our
wives, we can raise black boys. But only black men should train and
certify our boys into adulthood.

Finally, serious black men must sever the umbilical cord of
dependency on white paternalism. Only when we can challenge each
other to "do for self and kind" will our children emulate our
positive behavior.

We already have everything we need to begin and complete this
process of cultural, psychological and spiritual transformation. All
it takes is our individual decisions to stand up, come forward and
work unceasingly for the liberation of our families and communities
from racial oppression and economic exploitation.

Recently I heard someone on the radio go through a list of Black geniuses and inventors and doctors. It took him about 45 minutes just to name them and say what they had done. It was supposed to be a countermeasure to The Bell Curve. And I thought, Once again we are called upon to struggle like a bull who sees a red flag shimmering before his eyes, a flag that has been put there simply to distract him. They said we had no language, and we had to do something about that. They said had no art, and we had to worry about that. To be always answering questions and mounting defenses about things you thought were obvious keeps you from doing your work.
