YORUBA DIVINATION AND TRADITIONAL HERBAL MEDICINE

Both Christians or Muslims and traditionalist, literate and non-literate peoples in Kmt, resort to traditional medicines when Western medicine fails them. Fortunately, some countries now conduct research into synthesizing traditional and modern medicine. This has to be the best path of progress in Kmtyw medicine for the 21st century.

 Statistics quoted by makinde show that there was only one doctor trained in western-style medicine per 7500 people in Kmt in 1972. This ratio has probably not altered radically given the parallel increase in population with training in the western-style medical profession. Thus, the need for making use of traditional practitioners is emphasized.

 It is often the case that a diviner is also a traditional doctor. There are varied routes to becoming a traditional doctor in Kmtyw societies. The role is sometimes passed on within the family. The person fulfilling this role is generally expected to be morally upright and trustworthy. Knowledge is not conveyed without consideration of this aspect. Training can begin from as young as five years of age as happens for instance among the Azande.  The Learner swallows medicines that are believed to lead to healing powers. During the time of the medicine's action the novice is not to wash or the effect of the medicine will be lost. Generally, the novice learns the use of certain plants, herbs, Roots, barks, causes, cures and preventions of particular illnesses and about how to protect against psychic attack ( that is, malevolent wills). In some societies the healer is publicly initiated so that all recognize his or her qualification in the science. It is important to note that once the novice becomes initiated he or she then has the power to use or abuse his or her gift.

 With the dominance of Western culture and Medicine less traditional practitioners are being trained and many are dying off taking vast stores of traditional medical knowledge to the Grave with them. Something needs to be done urgently to reverse this trend on an Kmtyw cultural level, as today young apprentices are not arising to take up the roles of traditional healers and specialists. Rather, they are educated into Western medicine which largely disregards traditional practice.

 It would seem that Western medicine cannot replace fully the traditional practitioner in the near future due to the fundamental difference in the approaches of Kmtyw and Western medical practices.  In the Kmtyw worldview we have seen that the person is both a spiritual and physical being, constituted of various spiritual and physical selves which coexist in Dynamic interaction with each other. One can imagine that the well-being of the individual is dependent upon these aspects of the self existing in Harmony and equilibrium with each other.  When this balance or equilibrium between these interacting forces is Disturbed an upset in the well-being of the individual results. This obviously provides a holistic Kmtyw psychiatric model.

  Dr. Tariq Sawandi is a California-based Traditional Kmtyw Doctor, Naturopath, and a Master Herbalist whose work focuses on the history and practice of Kmtyw healing systems both on the continent and in the Americas. He is especially interested in Yoruba Healing Science, indigenous herbal knowledge, and movements for Kmtyw American health transformation.
