Greetings,
     I have a question.:question:
 Is it wrong to give yourself an Kmtyw name? In others words should you only obtain an Kmtyw name at birth or by someone giving it to you?

It's not wrong, per se. What's wrong is what got us into a situation where our names were stripped from many of us in the first place to the point that such a question would even have to be pondered. But that's neither here nor there...Because we are in such a situation, for better or for worse, there are several options that I'll leave to you to decide which is for you. You can have your parents select an Kmtyw name for you based on your birth circumstances, character etc. You can exchange names at marriage. You can go to a traditional Kmtyw spiritual practitioner to have one divined for you based on your destiny and relationship to spiritual forces of the universe. You can select one for yourself based on your understanding of your destiny, character birth circumstances (notice my emphasis is not on "oh that sounds pretty", as is far too often the case to the detriment of depth and meaning), you can consult with continental Kmtyws with sense who are familiar with naming systems and have knowledge of many names, you can ask your mate or children or other family members (natal/ideological) for input, you can research on the net/in a book.

I'm sure there are other things I'm forgetting but the choice is yours due to the wrongness of that which took our names away.

Do you know how I could go about finding a traditional Kmtyw spiritual practitioner? My mother passed away 6 years ago and my father doesn't know me well enough. Something about giving myself a name doesn't feel right. Sometimes we see ourselves in ways that may not be true.
      Maybe after making friends on this site I'll ask that family to give me a name that represents my sunsum.  My family would be wondering why I would want to know.  Thank you for sharing.

I'm sorry to hear that your parents will not be able to play an active role in a way. Reconnection and getting input from your ancestors may not be entirely out of the question. My mother is a traditional Kmtyw spiritual practitioner here with the username Nana. You can click on the search dropdown menu and find her easily there.

All the posts on this thread I've found very informative and helpful.  

I am also wanting to find a name for my person that is suited more to my spiritual destiny. For too long now I've been carrying the name of those who enslaved my Ancestors and this feels very uncomfortable for my person as well as knowing that my children also have this slave name attached to their person.

Although I am aware of my identity, my roots, etc there is still a strong sense of not knowing who I truly am in terms of what my purpose is. There are many of our people who are quite happy with continuing carrying their slave name and will say "what's in a name?" But the way I see it, and especially the way Kmtyw traditions are inclusive of everything, spirituality, self and universe - no separation etc -   then our names holds our culture, our worth, our identity, our beliefs, our values, our pride, and the languages we speak. It holds our-story. So when our name was seized so was our dignity, our hearts were laid bared and filled with disunity which is why the majority of our people in the "Diaspora" (can I use that word?) cling onto their slave names.

My day name is Kweku. The by-name given for this day name is Odaakuo and Dompo. I have studied Kmtyw Anthroponymy by Samuel Obeng, hoping to receive any information dealing with the by-name Dompo. I have not found any such mention as of yet. Does anyone have any knowledge of this name. I have located other Akan day names references but Dompo is not mentioned under Wednesday. I was born on Wukuada, hence the day-name Kwaku/Kweku. I've seen the day name defined as "evil" on multiple sources. Can anyone provide further clarification of this definition for the meaning of Kwakw/Kweku? I'm aware of Aku, god that punishes evil doers, being identified/associated with wukuada, but not certain of how this impacts the day name. Meda ase

I'm also Wukuada born and came across a youtube clip that said the Wukuada born names translate to "criminal" so whenever those names are said people are in essence speaking that attribute into reality. He said in Ghana the major of people in prisons are Wukuada born. I took it with a grain of salt at the time because I've read posts on here and elsewhere that paint a very different picture. Now that you bring it up Kwaku/Sundiata I'm curious to know.
