The Yoruba adage, "Adun ni ngbeyin ewuro," is a potent, encouraging verbal medicine in times of crises. First, let us examine the individual components of the message. Ewuro is a plant that can grow to become a tree if its leaves are not constantly plucked and its shrubs cut. The leaves double as medicinal herbs and as vegetable. Ewuro stew, with egunsi (melon seed), topped with deer meat, and eaten with iyan (pounded yam), is one of the most cherished stew in Emure Ile and the entire Ondo State of the old Yoruba nation. I believe this assertion is true of all the towns and villages that comprise the entire Yoruba people across the globe. Ewuro is mostly known as "bitter leaf" among Nigerians in general. When not used as stew, ewuro is a potent medicine for upset stomach and diarrhea, just to mention these two conditions for now. Ewuro is also an effective antidote against evil forces. Adun means sweetness, and ngbeyin means "ending."

The palatable uniqueness of ewuro is its bitterness in its raw form. So bitter is ewuro that the body's reflect reaction makes the face squeamish when ewuro is chewed raw. Then, the bitterness lingers in the tongue and throat for quite a while. This property of ewuro made it the most effective medicine to stop babies from breastfeeding in ancient times and in the early part of the twentieth century. However, as bitter as ewuro is in its raw form, it is very sweet in its traditionally processed form, which is why ewuro stew is a stew of choice in homes and at social gatherings.
