This very subject has been on my mind lately. The sister (respectfully) held her ground and pulled no punches.

At present, I'm wondering is it "better" (for lack of a more fitting word) for one to "take" a name for themself OR do something like what the sister suggested and receive a name in a communal setting OR even go with a divination?

Also, I thought it was interesting that as she pointed out, like here in the United Snakes, one can "legally" change their name without a whole lot of push back.  As important as it is to reconnect nominally, I can agree with folks who choose to identify themselves with their Kmtyw name WITHOUT going to massa to get his permission to reclaim it. Just my two cents...

I have had the same thoughts pertaining to getting permission from our enemy to change from my enemy name.

On your former point, I went the Akan route. My first name is my day name, Yaw, born on Thursday.

Asare, I got from my son when he was barely 2. He kept saying it, didn't know it was a name until an elder told me it was one of his in phone convo, then it clicked. So I figured the ancestors were speaking through my son.

My last name, Aboagye, I received through a divination. I was glad the decision was taken out my hands. And not choosing something that translates like "born ruler strong intelligent warrior savior of your people" type thing.

However you arrive in a name though just arrive there.

I really like your explanation. I'm Thursday born as well but I prefer the "kw" beginnings of male names in Akan, so when I found out that Kwao was a variation of Yaw - I was all for it.

I chose Shabaka as a second name 1. - in honor of our Great Ancestor Nesut, but also to try and truly be Pan-Kmtyw incorporating a name from various cultures/nations.

I've chosen Adewole as a surname, because to me it's a testament to my Kmtyw RE-birth, embracing the reality of being a member of our noble race. Coincidentally, I recently got the results of a DNA test, and my maternal ancestry is Yoruba, so as it turns out, Adewole is a good fit for now. I'm not certain if I'll "keep" it or not yet, but if not I may go for  divination to determine what it should be. I am also VERY interested in Ifa, so maybe I should consider initiation to correct my name.

My birth name is Paul Motingwa. I won't comment much on my first name, but my surname is Setswana (Tswana).

I once asked one of my  parents if I had an Kmtyw name, and they said my surname was also my middle name; that I was  named  after my paternal grandfather! I didn't buy it, until much later, my late father's sister said the  same  thing  (without me asking her).

Unfortunately I know very little of  my father family history, save for snippets related  to me by various relatives in casual  conversation. At least o It wn my mother's side an aunt who now has a Phd, once made a huge effort (with family help) to trace our family roots, back a few generations to beyond our (colonial) borders, and shared with the family at a reunion where relatives many of us didn't know were present.

Batswana are mostly patrilineal. I only distinctly remember two occasions   in my lifetime  where someone told me anything at all about my grandfather. It was my paternal aunt more recently, and an blind old man from my dad's village who was a relative of the chief.

My 'issue' with my surname is that it literally means 'a one who doesn't recieve a share'. Now for me it becomes 'double -barrel'!

As long as you hold a name legally you must answer to it. You are only the names you answer to jimmy. That is why I paid my money so I no longer have to answer to a slave name. I am no longer an alias

You go to massa to get paid, do banking, shop, pay taxes etc. there is power in forcing massa to call you Kunta Kente all the time and anytime he interfaces with you Toby.

I just watched sisterMazama’s video and it was the truth!! I’m looking for more of her videos onYoutube.

I had a dream aboutbeing given an Kmtyw name either for myself or one of my children: AyawaleEwende. I wanted to find out if this was a real Kmtyw name, so I contacted Obadele Kambon and he informed me that Ayawale was Yoruba and means “wife comeshome”. Ewende is also Yoruba and means “leaf” as in traditional medicine. Iknow this is not coincidence. I thought maybe the ancestors were naming me throughmy dream, so I thought about changing my name to Ayawale Ewende. I also dreamtthat a friend of mine was telling me the names of the people we came from:Odiki and Eshketi. I found some names of some people from Nigeria with Odiki astheir last name. I couldn’t find anything on Eshketi. I still want to be a partof a naming ceremony at some point for me and my children. Can’t wait to get aDNA test. Wouldn’t that be something if I found out I’m from the Yoruba tribeof Nigeria?!

I’m flippin’ the birdto these white devils who thought they can take our identity from us. Theancestors and are alive and well (and our Destiny Selves too) and are communicatingwith us drawing us to our destiny as Kmtyws. There’s no coincidence that weare all here on this website.
